Replacing prop UJ's - tips please

OK Prop is now off. I have the Yoke in the vice and am using a 19mm socket and banging that. The bearing cup is not moving at all and nothing is protruding out of the other end.

If you have a helper, you can use the vice to press the cups out. Use the 19mm socket onto the back of one cup. On the other side, use a larger socket that the cup can drop into. Hold the prop in the vice with the two sockets either side and wind the vice to press the small socket into the cup. It will drive the UJ across until the opposing cup drops into the bigger socket....... does that make sense?...... it's difficult to explain!!

Tip - remove the grease nipple first and drive the UJ away from the side with the nipple hole. The lump where it fits reduces the travel available.

This is the way I used to do it, but now I've got a press so it's a doddle  :D

Mate of mine who works on 4x4s everyday did one of mine in the field on the tailgate of a Range Rover using a small hammer and a tub of grease.  he did the whole lot quicker than I could boil a kettle.

Guess it's just practice.

True, I'd not done one for 10 years plus, one hammer 2 old sockets and a pair of circlip pliers, not even got a vice just the bench.

Took me about 40 mins for the first one, the second one 20

The last one I did was a swine though, the yoke was damaged and took a lot of filing to get it clean enough to get the spider out

Just have a go, there is not a lot of damage you cando by taking them out, juts got to be careful when refitting them

Range Rover Blues:
Here's a thing, if the cups seem a little loose or slide in too easily, they can start to turn in the yolks and make matters worse.  Try a spot of threadlock or stud'n bearing fit from Locktight to keep them in place.

i agree,doin them day n & day out ive never needed any more than a hammer & a pair of circlip pliers (an 7mm socket is handy to have aswell)hardest thing i find is getting the circlips out
