Today 4 pence dropped off fuel, who feels stupid?

--- Quote from: "muddyweb" ---It's a very smart move by the marketing people at the supermarkets... they absorb the cost increase in the fuel, take a loss-leader to get people to their premises and get to look like complete heroes at the same time....
The smaller organisations won't be able to compete, so depending on how long they plan to buy market share there is a real possibility of putting a good chunk of them out of business at the same time.

That was happening well before the fuel problems and this will make it worse. Did you know that there are 25% LESS forecourts than this time 5 years ago? With cars going up in numbers it is a worry that the supermarkets may almost have a monoploy on it :(
muddyweb:
Yep... this could well be the start of the 'price war' that silly chain letter was trying to start a while ago... as I say, it depends on how determined they are to keep their share / gain share.. Morrisons were talking about anything up to 11p / litre reduction... so the gloves are well and truly off... like I say.. a smart marketing move because they get nothing but good press for it.
landyman Ash:
Could not agree more. With costs as high as they are, even a whisper of a price slash gets them in the national papers and even has an effect on the supermarket share value.
We could be in for some interesting petrol prices!
Did you see in the news BP offered FREE petrol at one of its forecourts? Only 74 cars got it (most a full tank mind you) and it gets in every national paper! Talk about cheap advertising! But how very effective!
