I wouldn't be too bitter if that's the case!

Maybe I am bitter :?:  it's just that it would be so unlike the government to let something thats growing so fast go for too long without taxing it big time.   I do apologise for being negative its just that it seems some times that the whole world is against us enjoying our mode of fun (maybe not this time thougt as you point out)  :)  :)

I beleve last time round the tanker drivers went on strike in support of the protester's & that stoped the flow of fuel.
I beleve the govenment's responce was to make it illegal for the tanker driver's to go on strike    problem solved after all we can't have effective protest's can we . Not british is it .

Last time  the goverment put the military on standby to drive the tankers with escorts. The theory being to break the blockade and you the escorts to clear the roads for the tankers.

The problem is that there is no efficient way at hitting the cause of the problem.

OPEC have larger concerns than whether Britain is happy, since in the grand scheme of things we aren't all that important, ergo they are unlikely to respond to whatever pressure we can exert, especially if we chose to exert it in any form of blockade.

The Oil companies *may* respond to pressure applied in this manner, but their response is likely to either be short lived or proportionately small.  they can't realy change the price paid per barrel and whilst they can slash their profits they are at the end of the day answerable to their share holders and unlikely to take "drastic" action.

The Government ultimately, *could* cut tax, but as has been adequately pointed out this country costs a small fortune to run.  Since this figure won't change by people lining the streets in protest the additional money will *have* to come from somewhere.  So they drop tax on fuel by 5p a litre, they will still manage via an increase in income tax, tax on something else, import duty or something manage to extract that money from the population, since they will have to do that, or cut back services, the later not being considered a vote winner...

Once they've done that, and the price of oil comes back down (which it likely will once the US has recovered from Katrina) they will raise the levy on fuel duty again because it was a "temporary reduction",  however they will have a replacement source of income which they are unlikely to relinquish.  Ergo, in an effort to save us money they charge us more....

Just my $0.02

Gordon Brown, accrues increased revenues as the cost of fuel rises ,he might throw the motorist a few pence,In the lead up to xmas ,tanker drivers and everyone else  will be thinking about a steady income to pay for all those goodies ,this early in the govt life the electorate is irelevant.
Result misery for the motorist ,loads of overtime for the police and armed forces,Gods in his heaven ,and we await the successor to the internal combustion engine, which is well overdue.
        Have a nice life.

I noticed something strange today
The diesel fuel near me is 99.9p a ltr.
The diesel fuel in central London is 94.9p a ltr
Why?
London cheaper than everywhere else???
How does that happen.
Very odd.  :?

I filled the Disco earlier and it cost me 96.9p/lt.

Put £58.00 worth in, which equates to 59.75 lts.   It was never that expensive for my Astra!!!!  Although unleaded was more expensive than Diesel!

Petrol & diesel are now the same price up here, £1.02.9 per litre, as of yesterday!

As for the fuel blockades/protests, didn't affect us last time cos our fuel comes by boat from Grangemouth!  :D
Still looking at converting the Rangie to LPG though.

Actually with the way the gov't taxes the oil inductry they could quite happily 'fix' the price of fuel because they make so much tax on the refineries anyway.  The cost of fuel tax is far more than 340 percent, it's more like 500 plus.

The problem will not be a short-term one either, it's not just this hurricane, that's just an excuse for their greed, it's the emergence of China and other developing countires as oil-consumers.  Now that they have all our manufacturing jobs they want to drive cars! whatever next.

Untill we stop the Ynaks using 5 time the amount of fuel per head that we do in Europe there will be no answer.

As for LPG, it's right that it's a waste product of the gas and oil industries, we have plenty and they want us to use it. It is a clean fuel and LPG cars will be exempt from future polution/congestion charges becasue of it.
In Australia it's far more widely used and still cheap enough to be a worthwhile alternative.  To the oil companies it's almost money for old rope!

Oh well, that price didn't last long!
Went into Stornoway yesterday and what was on the board at the filling station...................

Unleaded - £1.05.9
Diesel - £1.06.9

That's 5 pence a litre rise in 3 days!!  :(bigangry):

Still, got enough in the tank to get me to Inverness next Wednesday so I'll fill up there before heading South to Hull.  :?

ours went a bit weird.. one day it was 95.9 unleaded and 99.9 diesel... then the next day it was 102.9 and 104.9 which there was an uproar about, so they took it down to 100.9 and 102.9 the day after... just after i filled up

either way 7p increase was a bit of a joke! but somehow doubt it will be going down again any more!

It depends how much discomfort people are willing to endure in order to make a stand.  Last time things were happening and the government were scared, but half the folk you spoke to were moaning cos they had no fuel to get to work or Asda.

the damn government needs to drop the taxes since they are getting about 60% of the cost of fuel.

Sounds like you've given up before the battle commences.  The government are meant to look after our interests, if enough people stand up and make it clear we are not impressed then they have to take notice.  The problem is not enough people are willing to stand up and be counted, they would rather do the British thing of moan like hell and accept whatever is thrown at them.  It is a shame cos i think that our opinion is the vast majority.  A band in the early 90's had it right called L7 "they aint moral and they aint the majority" AMEN!!!!!!!!!

have filled my disco up today at 99.9p per litre, in Barrow on Soar near where i work, i have noticed diesel at £1.03 and petrol at £1.05. The guy in the filling station today mentioned that there would be fuel blockades on wednesday too. Like he said tho, its not the tax thats pushed prices up this time!

Still on 97.9 p/l here at the moment.

They blame the price hike on the storms at the moment, a month or two ago they were blaming it on the workers in the Mexican Gulf for being on strike for the last 2 years because they need a pay rise.
What will the excuse be next week?

Not at all, but as I said earlier...  whether you like the way the country is run or not... it costs a certain amount of money to do so... that money comes from taxes.  We might all get our way and get a fuel tax cut, but another tax will go up to make up the deficit.

All this angry feeling toward the government is fine and dandy, but they aren't the ones making the fuel price rise at the moment.   Yes, they are collecting tax, and theorectically, they could reduce tax and effectively absorb the price increases on our behalf...  but that's another issue.
