Transfer box tardis

(1/4) > >>

jnoshea:
Did the oil part of the 24k service yesterday so new fluids all round.  Now the main gearbox took exactly the amount it should and then a dribble comes out of the filler hole.  But the transfer box took around to 4.5 litres and Ive checked the manual a few times now and I'm sure it's meant to be 2.8 litres    Am I not meant to fill it until it dribbles out of the filler hole like the main box? Am I looking forward to 1.7 litres of EP80w90 slowly leaking out under the car over the next few weeks?  :?

jnoshea:
I checked the procedure again and it seems that you are meant to fill the transfer box until a steady dribble from the filler.  So how the hell have I managed to get 4.5 litres in there

well,  I'm not entirely sure, but there *could* be cause for concern.

In the days of the series the seals twixt gearbox and transfer box were prone to failing effectively making them one unit.  I don't know if this is true of the discovery, but given that the two require different types of oil I would suggest it is worth checking that your stray 2l didn't end up in the gearbox.

i think i no what might be the problem,

what plug did you use to fill the transfer box??? the 1 on the rear behind the handbrake drum to the left or the 1 near the top On the left hand side??

if the 1 on the rear you have a problem internally & its allowing the oil to go somewhere its not ment to But if its the 1 at the top its the wrong hole youve got so over filed it,discovvered this on a discovery that had been serviced by a "landrover trained" mechanic & it had been filled in the wrong hole

I think I filled through the one on the top left   Certainly wasn't on the rear by the handbrake drum.  Ok, so probably good news.  I guess I should open the proper one then and let the excess drain out .  Can any damage be caused by overfilling the transfer box
