I read the article and got the impession it'll be the end of the free retest should yours fail first time.

Because the tester has to log back in a second time to retest your vehicle you pay again  :evil:

More money for the government, and if someone reports your smoky diesel do you then have to have an test  :?:

Free retests have been at the discretion of the testing station for a long time.  Most offer them  to get/keep trade, in the same way that some discount the fee.  Some will without a doubt stop.

After failure, fees for re-examination vary according to the following circumstances:
If your vehicle is left with the Testing Station for repair and re-examination – NO FEE

If the vehicle is taken away from the Testing Station and returns for re-examination on other than one or more of the items listed below, the vehicle must be fully inspected on all Testable items, for which the Testing Station may charge (up to) the full Test fee.

“NO FEE” RE-TEST ITEMS
Free re-test* items which do not require the full Test to be conducted if the vehicle is brought back to the station and re-Tested before the end of the next working day:

*Only one free re-test is permissible per MOT
