Budgie:
As the email is asking you to log into your account on PayPal and not giving you a link within the email, then it could be genuine.
You have to register a credit card when you sign up for an eBay account and PayPal is part of eBay!! Anyway, you've done the right thing if your not happy with it, PayPal will answer the email and let you know.
I've had a number of spoof emails reportedly from PayPal asking me to log into my account using a link at the bottom of the message, not very well done cos if you "mouse over" the address another url appears at the bottom of the screen! Dead give away that it's spoof!!
Anyway, I've sent every one of these to PayPal and checked the site within 24hrs and each time it's been closed down! =D>
So it does help to send them in, don't just think "well they won't take any notice" cos they do.
Kate:
Tip,
Take every email you receive from Ebay or paypal and send it back to them, they will confirm if it is a real one.
Do not take chances as I have had this problem someone started using my original account selling and buying and I couldn't access my account.
So now I do not take that chance, I just send everything to Spoof, and they confirm with me if it is real.
I think they maybe fed up with me sending them, but it is a small price to pay.
TimM:
I've had a similar paypal scam on my work email - something along the lines of:
'Receipt for £1000 paypal payment.'
Looks genuine (but isn't), as it is a good copy of an actual receipt, the obvious flaw is that I use my private email for paypal, it gives you a link to 'your' paypal account ('sign in here') so you can check who you've paid.
i.e. trying to get your sign in details so they can rip you off.
I hadn't realised there was an emial you could forward them too (spoof@paypal.co.uk), I will forward them on next time.
ALWAYS BE AWARE!
Tim.
