Meaningfull lyrics.... (another boring music question)
« Reply #30 on: August 08, 2003, 00:29:22 »
Right, let's have a go then.

1.????

2. 'Jean Genie', David Bowie
(or was he still Ziggy at that stage?)

3. 'Wuthering Heights', Kate Bush
(not as good as the Babushka video, songwise I prefer 'Cloudbusting')

4. 'Video killed the Radiostar', Buggles
(Was it Trevor Horn, the 'Art of noise' guy?)

5. ???

6. 'Norwegian Wood', Beatles
(Was it George harrison or Ravi Shankar playing the Sitar

7. ??

8. 'I'm Mandy (fly me)', 10CC

9. 'American Pie', Don McLean
(Why did Madonna have to 'slaughter' this song? I take it you know it's an allegory about American music?)

10. 'Bohemian Rhapsody', Queen
(As if no-one knew. Most memorably featured for the best use of an AMC Pacer in 'Waynes World')

Sorry, have I spoilt it for everyone at work tomorrow, still no-ones got any of mine apart from Maddy with 'Maybelline'.

Come on they're not too hard, well maybe the first 3 are.

"If all you've got to prove today is your innocence
Calm down, you're as guilty as can be
If all we've got to lose alludes to yesterday
Yesterdays through
Now do anything you please"

"On a mission to make something happen
Feel like Delilah lookin' for Sampson
Do a little mattress dancin'
That's right I said mattress dancin' "

"Saw a Dead-Head sticker on a Cadillac*
Little voice inside my head saying don't look back
You can never look back
Thought I knew what love was, what did I know
Those days are gone forever
I should just let 'em go"

"You've heard about the legend of Jesse James**
And John Henry just to mention some names
There's a truck drivin' legend in the south today
A man called ..........from Atlanta GA"
"Every gear-jammer knows his name
Swear he's got ice water runnin' in his veins
A foot like lead and nerves like steel
He's gonna go to Glory ridin' 18-wheels"

*quite possibly one of the best  summer tracks ever

**Clue. From film soundtrack, sung by actor from film (played guitar for, & had a song covered by Elvis Presley)

All car related, however loosely

What about:

"I'm goin' down, down baby your street in a Range Rover"

Bit of a trick question, as it hasn't been sung by the English artist from Northampton yet. Will he wear bling-bling when it arrives :?:

'Marie Anne'
That is Jeff Lynne & his boys (ELO), 'Mr Blue Sky'

Nice picture.
Someone I used to know went to school with Andrew Eldritch.

"Girl you taught me how to hurt real bad and cry myself to sleep
You showed me how this town can shatter dreams
Another lesson about a niaive fool who came to Babylon
And found out that the pie don't taste so sweet"

"I grew up on the dragstrip
I used to shut 'em down
I used to take their pink-slip
There's a sucker born in every town
I never showed no mercy
I blew them all away
They stood there and cursed me as I towed their lives away"

"There's a '49 Merc goin' round
Ridin' about half an inch off'a the ground
I'm in a .................
Boom boom shangalang shimmy shimmy shoowap bang-bang"

"I got outa work and headed for the neighbourhood beer-joint
I sat around and had a beer with the boys like I always do
Well I didn't have nothing to say, anyway there ain't no point
There's something 'bout a Monday that always makes me blue

Well it was well after dark so I knew my wife & kids would be waitin'
And I guess I took a left where I normally take a right
Wel l filled her up with gas, checked the oil at the Texaco station
I threw the car-seat in the dumpster and headed out into the night"

"Get kicked out for comin' home at dawn
by mom & dad' cause they were bawlin'
Throw some clothes into a dufflebag
shoutin' and slammin' 'bout how home's a drag
Who can I turn to, where can I stay?
Heard 'bout a place that's open all night and all day
It's a place you can go that the Cops don't know
you can act real wild, they don't treat you like a child"

Moose - you're way off! The first one was Summer Night City, a must for every disco, and the second one was Winner takes it all, now go back and listen to that CD again!

Everyone else - well done, you've got most of them, especially BTM (yes I agree Cloudbusting is better, just the lyrics didn't spring immediately to mind. I suppose 'I hide my yo-yo in the garden' might have been a good choice. )

If you want some clues for those you haven't got yet -
1. This is the name of a girl. Another of this bands songs has recently been covered by the Corrs. That should make it easy.
7. A good old 80s song with lots of keyboard. some more lyrics from the same song: 'Take your hands off me, I don't belong to you, you see, take a look at my face for the last time, I never knew you, you never knew me....'[/quote]

Correct Maddy & Darren

'Boys of Summer' by Don Henley, released in 1985 believe it or not.
It must be one of th most evocative records about a lost or mis-spent  past ever. Henley was the drummer in The Eagles.

Yep, 'Runaway Boys' from the eponymous debut album released in 1981 (2 copies on a shelf as I type)
The album also featured the singles 'Stray Cat Strut' & 'Rock This Town'
Brian Setzer was (& still is) a superb guitar player.
the only downside to the band was the fact that the drummer 'Slim Jim Phantom' married (still?) Britt Eckland.

5 on 8th August @ 14:27

Which is a grand total of 16, only 3 have been guessed.

For Maddy
With regard to your posting with the lyrics for 'And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda'
I've found the actual lyrics, complete with a synopsis of Bogles reasoning behind writing it, that's if my brief scan of the text is correct.
I take it your Pogues version is on 'Rum, Sodomy & The Lash'

Have a look at;
www.westfront.de/eric_bogle_waltzing_matilda.htm

There are also the lyrics for Bogles far superior (in my opinion) 'The Green Fields Of France' at;
www.home.hccnet.nl/s.vangompel/greatwar/music/williemcbride.html

Hopefully both these links will work.

I got introduced to  www.lyrics.net.ua  by someone. There's stacks of stuff on there, just go by the full name - if a solo artist, put the christian name first.
Words to 'Matilda' on there.
There are also most of the lyrics that I pulled from my record collection, for some reason no Stray Cats though, but (the brilliant) Brian Setzer does feature.

As does Don Henley for 'Boys of Summer', I got the album wrong as I was going from memory with those lyrics, as I don't have it.
'B-o-S' was on 'Building The Perect Beast, not 'End of The Innocence'
