gearbox oil

(1/2) > >>

big lizard:
hello again
i am wanting to do a full service in a couple of weeks and was wondering how easy is it to change the gearbox oil.
also what is the best gearbox oil to use and do i need any special tools to do the job

thanks adam

Wanderer:
It's ATF and if you're anything like me I had a hell of a job getting the filler plug undone.

Make sure you check that it will come undone BEFORE you drain the oil.

Luckily I did check.

On my 1993 200tdi it's a 1/2" square plug and no end of trying spanners would work. I ended up with an adapter on a long breaker bar.
It's the opposite to the T box filler.

toger:
Difflock.com do a special replacement plug.
Worth investigating.

gords:
Also, the filler holes on both gearboxes, as far as I remember, are a PITA to get to

I bought one of these UMETA 1 Litre Oil and Fluid Transfer Pump things from DiffLock - most defintely worth the money - IMHO

Wanderer:
It was actually the guy from difflock (is it Pete) that got it loose for me on his drive.
He's a good lad.
