Title: Door repairs ?
Post by: Kenny on November 15, 2003, 09:09:34
Guess what the doors are rotten, in that the steel at the bottom has rusted away.

I don't really want to replace the door as it costs a lot and would rather repair. Any thoughts or recommendations on how to achieve this and a rough guide on how much.

TIA

Evenin'

In the Land Rover Restoration Manual it explains how to re-skin doors. If your skins are okay, you could follow the instructions to separate the door from the frame, repair the frame then re-attach the skin.

When you re-attatch the skin, make sure you put a membrane between the skin and the frame...

The manual should be available from Halfords, or direct from haynes on their website.

Cheers

I remember reading somewhere that the repair pieces you can get for Series doors can be used.  By carefully removing some of the outer alumimium skin (i.e. peel back some of the folded over section), and placing a protective piece of metal between the frame and the skin, you should be able to cut away the rusty section and weld in some of the repair pieces, once painted you can remove the protection piece and gently fold the alumimium skin back into place.
In theory anyway.....

The other option would be, if you the series repair pieces don't fit, is to follow the same process and cut out the rusty bits, and use these as a template to make your own repair pieces.

I must admit, this is just theory - never tried it myself.
