Title: Freelander 2004 td4 went bang
Post by: stevepage3 on February 23, 2012, 16:12:42
My wifes TD4 went kaput this morning

loss of power followed by plume of blue smoke and then clouds of white smoke.

all of the coolant has gone and looks like most of the oil, I am no mechanic but I am guessing head gasket and whatever it is no doubt going to be expensive.

Any of you more educated types want to offer up a diagnosis.

Thanks

Steve

Hi there it could also be a turbo fault as the td4 suffers from these a lot. Does not explane the coolant loss but it may of been low anyway (just a thought)
I have change two turbos and a engine in the last few weeks because of turbo faults on the td4 caused by lack of maintenance people forget to change the breather/filter in the top engine

Hi Mike

Thanks for the reply, is it a given that if the PCV filter has not been changed that the turbo will be damaged.  Have just spoken to the garage who have ordered a new filter
and are hoping that this shouldl cure the problem ???

ouch, just been told by the garage that we need a new engine.   whats my best course of action by a second hand one and get it fitted, have a go myself have had my 200tdi in and out of my defender several times.

or pay to get it reconditioned.

Depends on how much the garage want to replace it, you could try supplying your own engine for them to fit, call all of the breakers see if they have anything get on ebay checking daily if your quick on there you can some times pick up a bargain dont forget to call all of the rover breakers its the same engine that they put in the 75 and MG ZT    BUT i dont know if the turbos are the same i think you might have to change over a few parts on them to make them fit.
They are not a bad job to do but i havent had to do one on a drive plus i have got ramps to work on with lots of space. Last one i got from ebay cost me
