Title: How long will Alarm take to drain Battery?
Post by: John Clayton on April 07, 2010, 14:29:55
My '94 Disco 300 TDI has a factory CATS Alarm and Immobiliser on it, complete with flashing red LED (and red LED on radio cassette).  It appears to trickle-drain the battery over time and I understand this is a common fault with Jags and Land Rovers of this age fitted with CATS.

As a result I've fitted a DisCarNect device to the battery lead so the power can be cut off when the vehicle's not used for more than a few days

Has anybody else experienced this problem or know how to fix it?
How long will the battery last before it's no longer able to start the vehicle?

Don't know exactly, but a couple of years ago I ended up with a flat battery over the winter months after a week so I fitted a small solar trickle charger from Maplins which seems to have solved it.

If this works, (which the recommendations say it does) could be worth investing 20 quid  :-k

Actually I think that CATS [Computer Anti Theft System] is actually referring to the 'code' needed for the Stereo [rather than the alarm]

It can be as little as a couple of days, especially this weather.  My sister's ended up with a split charge system, the car running from a leisure battery that is designed to be flattened and the starter running form the original battery.  It's easy to do without cutting any of the original wires on a TDi, you just need a 3 some battery wires, a short battery link and a 100 amp relay (like X-ENg sell).
