Title: Series 2.25 diesel starter motor options/ battery
Post by: baron von ledwidge on October 19, 2010, 11:07:43
I have two questions really as i think my starter is [!Expletive Deleted!] on my 2.25 diesel, it will barely turn over at all offering low power it spins up slowly to compression and has real trouble passing this point, i have charged the battery and tried the one from my mates 200tdi tho this was only 550CCA i tried witha 600CCA battery with still much the same result.  so my question is really in two parts

how big a battery should my series need as i seem to remember having an 850cca battery in it before, or if 600 should be enough,

what starter motors will fit on the 2.25d to widen my options? i have heard a 200tdi disco starter will work, is this true or just hear say and if so what abotu a 2.5td starter?

thanks
aaron

I had a very similar problem to yours. I checked every thing to no avail then one day out of frustration i tugged on the earth strap and it fell apart in my hands. Don't just give it a visual check take it off and give it a proper check. bought an of the shelf earth cable from tms and the problem was solved. hope this helps. also check the carbon brushes in the motor and clean the segments with a spray switch cleaner and lubricant again from a car accessory shop.

Yeah i can give that a go, i did forget to say as a quick check for bad earth i connected a jump lead from the earth strap of the battery fo the engine lock fist on the lifting point then on one of the flanges obviously not the best way to strap an earth but it made mo difference, the car has been sat off the road for about two years so i did whip off the solenoid before i started and clean it with wd40 i may have to take the thing to bits but i figured if i could get one cheap enough that would sort it, do you know what power battery you use?  would my 70AH 600cca battery be good enough?

Sorry about the delay in replying, I missed your response. it is not the main earth cable that causes the problem it it the short earth cable that runs from the starter motor to the solenoid. and I am convinced that is the source of your problem. You may have found the fault by now. Let me know if you have sorted it.
Cheers,

Hey buddy, it was just a shot starter in the end, i opened it up and there as no stepping at all in the commutator ring, the bushes were siezed with 2 snapped springs, so i had it reconed and it seems ok now, thanks for the reply tho. and yeah happily its all sorted now :)
