Title: 110 Ambulance
Post by: bravo669 on September 04, 2012, 21:41:11
hi all, we have just aquired an ex st johns 110 ambulance which was converted by land rover special vehicles. the battle plan was to turn it into a camper. when we tried to insure it , the companies wanted to know if the camper conversion would be professional or not, if not they were not willing to insure it. we havent started converting it yet but the plan was to do it ourselves. does any body have any experience of this or know anyone willing to insure it?

as usual any help greatly appreciated.

cheers

I know a friend has to insure their 109 with a camper insurance company as non of the land rover ones would cover it but hadn't heard about that problem.

So like a box affair on the back? Different roof again to what I was thinking off.
Few years ago there was a v8 110 ambulance scrapped in the big yard near Devizes once and I had a few bits and bobs off it but didn't have the foresight to take the whole thing. It has been used by hippy travellers and parked up in a byway broken down where they eventually got evicted. I know this as they had written a diary on the side of the truck! The truck was pretty standard looking body but the roof panel had been replaced with one that was maybe 8 to 12 inch higher with no sloped section at the front. It was in alloy and had been foam insulated inside with other winterised mods. Dunno if the travellers did it but there was secret cavities in the rear of the roof hidden under the insulation. The roof could have fitted any 110. I had the stainless roof bars and ladders off it. Never seen another ambulance like it.
Idiot scrappy dumped cars on top of it and crushed the lot.

ask your insurance company to define what 'professional' means.  Why is some bloke who sets himself up in business as a camper converter any better than you?  If you just need gas/elec/water certifying you can get someone to do that.  Personally I would shop round insurance companies until I found a realistic one.

um, more information on it here now.

dad has decided to sell it as we don't have the time to get the project off the ground.
