I am really thinking about getting this from the reply the seller has given me. I need a friend to pop round and look for me.

Definitely needs a good looking over and mainly under...
Quote
it was used on a farm for several years

yes, did see that and wondered. The inside doesnt look like it has had farm use though eg lots of ripped seats etc.

IF I could get it for £1200 do you think I could sell it on for the same amount? I am hoping a MC'er will be able to help me out by going to have a look for me asap. We shall see.

Why would you buy it for £1200 then sell it for £1200?

i meant if it turned out to be something wrong. I have a way of buying broken cars!

I would be inclined to ask if it had had an engine swap,
the seller states 2000cc.
Is that a misprint, or has it had a none LR engine fitted?

£1200 sounds a tad steep, I would look at other sites as well as the bay,
maybe somewhere like Preloved?

Personally I wouldn't pay over £800 for it.  If you keep looking you can get something much better for £1200

why is that then? what seems wrong with it and what extra would I get for £1200?

It's just overpriced.  If you keep an eye out you'll easily find a good one for under a grand.
At £1200 you're getting close to the amount you'd need to spend to get one that's already on a galvanized chassis.

I had a couple of good ones from the Admag in the last year.
A 109 with tax and MOT for £420
A 88 on a galvanized chassis for £1150
and a 88 with tax and MOT for £740

Alot of people are buying from Ebay these days and it's pushed the prices up.

Looks like they've spent some money on getting it through the MOT and are trying to recoup it. Does seem high for a starting price. I would put it on my watch list and let it go. You might see it relisted and as others have said there are plenty about.

I havent found any of that price. Places I look are on here, ebay and auto trader. I havent found any other decent web sites yet.

Some come up at reasonable prices on lro.com, and http://carandclassic.co.uk (http://carandclassic.co.uk) is worth watching too

If someone can find me a tax exempt 88 with a galv chassis thats legal i would buy one every week!!!!  At 1200 you have got to look at it.  If the chassis is good no prob. You can buy a minter but the old saying is "NEVER TRUST A TIDY LANDY"

Classic car prices appear to be on the up.  I'm not sure if £1,000 now will get you the same as a year ago.  From other sources it sounds like that you'd need to spend a couple hundred more (poss. a lot more for the tidier ones) to get a same condition Series as to a year or two ago.

I would be inclined to ask if it had had an engine swap,

Engine bay photo shows a standard 2286 in there.

Agree, at first glance, the only modification I can spot on the engine is the air filter.

As for price, if the vehicle is in the condition they are saying, at the moment it is a good price. That doesn't mean that in 6 months time the prices won't go back to what they were a year ago.You pays your moneys, you takes your chances.

Perhaps £1200 isn't a bad starting price when you compare it with this one http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1949-Land-Rover-Series-1-80_W0QQitemZ290394519568QQcategoryZ29756QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp4340.m8QQ_trkparmsZalgo%3DMW%26its%3DC%26itu%3DUCC%26otn%3D5%26ps%3D63

a series 1 shouldn't really be used to compare prices with an early S3, as thier prices and parts prices generally aren't even close from what i've seen (only been looking at landies for the last year) unless you're looking at comparing it with a very early number S2 ('58-'59) in factory original supply condition (all original but aged)...

£1200 "possibly" isn't a bad price on this motor but as has already been said it needs a good looking over and assessment for not too much future work/repair requirements and general "honest" condition of the rest of it, i feel it may be a little on the high side and it's a shame there's no overdrive ...

i'd just check to see the quality of the welding repairs that have been done as i've seen quite a few bodged patches on landy chassis in the last year which have made it no better than when it had the hole in open view (thin tin covered just to get it thru the mot rather than the rot cut out and replaced with good solid metal), check the bulkhead/footwells/A-posts over carefully as repairs to these can run away with money ...

i paid £350 for mine without knowing the first thing about them, very tired 2.25 diesel, rotted out dumbirons, swiss cheese bulkhead and no cab, luckily i can weld and swing spanners, ok it's still not pretty but it's solid (ish) now and goes like the clappers having swapped the engine for the 200tdi and 3.54 diffs

the price of good series 3 landies seem to be shooting up. Did anyone see the rebuilt series 3 on the bay that just sold for 11 grand..

Wizard from here has kindly seen it last week for me and he says it is in great nick. I made them an offer of £1000 and they said they will let the auction run and if there are no bids will consider my kind offer.

We will see on Tuesday I guess, but currently still no bids. he says he has about 70 watchers but I know from past experience this means nothing! He also has someone viewing it today. Ahh

have a look at the series 3 safari in cream with the title NKS 416R - 1977 - 88" Series III - NUT AND BOLT RESTORATION on this web site. (http://www.landrovercentre.com/stock/classic_Land_rovers_for_sale.htm) It is about 2/3rds of the way down the page.

Ok it is lovely, very lovely and is the type I would like as my dad had a cream safari s3 but not at thier price I wont be buying it!

Just had a look at that website.

Hope he's got a 2nd job because it's going to be a loooooong time before he gets any cash from selling those

Just because someone advertises something doesn't mean it will sell.

Have a look on autotrader for a series, from £400 > £1000 will see you something with mot and tax, then it's a case of looking like you would at any car.

I've always thought Huddersfield LRC has been over pricey, but he's been going for years so there must be plenty of people willing to pay those prices.
