Title: Mot questions??
Post by: kevinragman on December 09, 2009, 20:15:09
Good evening!!  I was wondering if anyone could help with a few mot questions :-k :-k  Firstly, my car is a 1980 model and does this have to have hazards??  Not got any and looks like there has never been any!  Secondly, fog light, the same not got one and no switches to say there was one, and lastly, seatbelts.  Again five seats, 3 in the front driver and passenger have 3 point belts but no lap for the middle and the two fold down rear ones have nowt.  That's about all I can think of at the moment as the mot is close, not close enough but getting there!!  Any help would be fan dabbie dozy!!  Did I really say that??   Many thanks in advance.  Kevin. I "think" if its not fitted it can't be tested!! would apply?

I think even some early Ninety's didn't have hazards, so wouldn't worry about that. Likewise fog lights, not fitted.

The two front seats are fine, the middle one was never fitted with a belt, so no worries there, if you are worried then I would just remove the seat squabs for the MOT?

As for the rear benches? There I don't know? I would be tempted to remove for MOT.

As crazymac said. Hazards and Fog light are not compulsory for your vehicle, nor rear belts.

Not sure about middle seat, but just remove for the test and refit afterwards.

Very true, but personally I wouldn't refit them anyway, cubby box into the middle as its a PITA that seat anyway, waste of time IMHO, and I wouldn't carry anyone in the back either, seatbelts or no seatbelts, far to dangerous.

rear belts are compulsory for cars manufactured from 1987 onwards, so rear seats are fine without.

land rover wheel boxes count as rear seats anyways so not so important, coz if you've removed them then you've got some major issues

The way I understand it is that inwards facing rear seats are exempt from requiring seatbelts. This also means that there is a loophole that means that children, of a height that would normally need a booster seat, do not need to use one due to the fact that there is no seatbelt to secure it with.

It can get rather confusing.

Why do you not just fit a static type lapbelt in the centre at the front?

 ;)

Mine still has the lapbelt in the centre even though I removed the seat quite some time ago!

i thought you couldnt put kids in sideways faceing seats anymore??? with or without seatbelts why dont the center seats need them is it cus in a crash the center passenger can hold on to the gear stick? or maybe the center window piller on leafer stops them flying out seems daft

when I had my s3 I took out the non return coiling seat belts from the sides and put re coiling ones in and put the non coiling one into the middle so all the seats had 3 point belts. the back benches never had any seat belts. Also the fog light didnt work properly ie turn it on the light in the lamp went off and vice versa. They said not to worry as it wasnt needed. that was a 83 s3.

OK here goes! Hazards are only needed after 1986, foglamp as previously mentioned is April 1st 1980 & rear belts after Sept. 1988. However, if any of these ARE fitted then they have to work! ;)
