Title: WJ Engine Reliability
Post by: El Hair on December 18, 2008, 22:20:20
Looking to get a 4x4 soon. I'm really keen on getting a WJ GC, but am curious about engine reliability.

Given that the car could be around 10yrs old and have some 100K on the clock, what would be the expected lifespan on the engine? At the risk of being näive, some engines must last longer than others. So, what's the verdict?

bought one 2 years ago with 100k on the clock, now has 145k and doing fine, regular oil & filter changes and they do 200k plus (talking 4litre inline 6 here)

Thanks for the link Popoff, it's helped a lot.

Looking through what some people have it would appear that I should expect to get a good 150K+. However, this would obvioulsy assume it's not been ragged senseless. Even so, it's good to see that they should last a while.

IL6 appears to be 'better' then the V8. Would this be the consensus?

The V8 comes with better axles as well ;) - the axles go more often than the engines

Ah, the Dana type! That's another thing I'd need to know, but was going to leave that until later. Still, with a vague idea now at least I can look at prices of protection.

According to http://www.jpmagazine.com/featuredvehicles/154_0706_1993_2004_jeep_grand_cherokee/index.html (http://www.jpmagazine.com/featuredvehicles/154_0706_1993_2004_jeep_grand_cherokee/index.html) the axle config is "...Dana 30 up front and the aluminum centersection Dana 44 out back..."

Once again, thanks for all the advice and here's to the New Year and a new toy. Watch out Surrey and Hampshire!

Same on all models 30 up front, ally housed 44 in the rear, only difference is the quadra drive ones have vari-lok LSDs in them (not all v8's are quadra drive tho)

Ah, that's good to know; 30 up front, and 44 out back.

I now have a '99 WJ (Quadra-Trac II) - check out my photos in the gallery.
