Big probs... Loss of drive
« on: November 11, 2013, 11:14:31 »
Just lost complete traction... was pulling out of a junction and at first I thought it had slipped out of high, but no tried to get it to move in high low and diff lock, nothing... Removed the rear prop and repeated high low diff still nothing... is it worth replacing the rear prop and removing the front?

its a 300tdi 90.

Any thoughts on whats gone wrong and what to test.. much appreciated.

Dave

Could it be the transfer box input shaft has lost its splines Dave, just wondering if its one of the early ones that didn't have the shaft cross drilled so no lube on the splines.

I hope its something easier though

Second vote for the transfer input stripping itself.  Would be surprised if swapping prop would work as that is effectively what you did putting the centre lock in. Chance to get a disco one though and up the gearing a bit.

The votes at the moment are aiming in the region of input gear / shaft... Motor is still on the verge outside the house... Going to try and get out later and make some space in the shed, then borrow a tractor to push it in...

Another vote for the input shaft , based on description given. Why not whip off the PTO cover on the rear of the transfer box and have a look see? The wear will be evident as will the grinding paste that results.
Have heard tales of emergency bush repairs by inserting nails/fence wire into the gears worn splines to gain enough drive to get mobile again.

If it turns out to be the input shaft/gear, the gear itself can be removed with transfer box in situ. Old style input gears should leave the inner portion of the shaft unworn/unused and then it maybe possible to use the later type of input gear with its longer mating surface that would engage those virgin splines and give a few tens of thousand miles before having to think about rebuilding/replacing whole box.

odd thing is that by the introduction of the 300tdi I think that they had switched to the crossdrilled mod already so shouldn't suffer premature wear. What's the milage? and is the tranny original? Lots of ppl swap transfer boxes off disco's to gain the different ratio gearing... unfortunately they might source the box from an old 200tdi disco and introduce an un modified/un-updated input gear.

Its an early 300Tdi 94, Just under 90k on the clock, it was a farm vehicle for its previous life and spent most of its time being driven by the elderly farmer who never took it further than 10miles and driven like miss daisy... Ive got the pto cover off, just cleaning out the crud... before investigating further..

One of those occasions when it sucks being a land rover owner.  That said it will be better and stronger than ever when you're done.

BUt.... (unless you're going whole hog for peace of mind) see that portion of spline inboard? Are they not unused, they should be virgin? I thought that one of the official fixes was to replace with a later cross drilled input gear which has a longer length which should/will engage that portion of the splined shaft and Christmas could be back on!

Still find it strange to find a non-cross drilled input gear on that vehicle.

Thinking along a new tack, after reading through the overhaul manual thinking it might be easier for the moment to get a 2nd hand box... One question what would have to swop over between a 300tdi Disco box to make it fit a def.. obviously the stick linkages and bellhousing, but what else...

Its a waiting game.. on the wallet being refilled... currently looking at replacement of: g/box, clutch kit, fork, rear crank seal as thats decided it was a good time to go as well, and not of course forgetting the input gear and associated bearings...

Got the gearbox out on sunday, though its not really out, its still trapped under the 90 so its a highlift and drag it out as and when I can get it done...

Had it back on the road a week later... Recon box from a company in Brum as they were the cheapest on the block for one, new input gear and bearings... Just been back in to the input gear cover to replace gaskets and all seems okay.... Now just to get some UJ's ordered as the front prop is rattling... there's never much rest from the witch wanting something...

Same problem on my Defender last year, it was the High/Low/Diff lock selector gear stick on the transfer box.
The arm had snapped.
Take off the rubber gear stick cover and have a look at the linkage.
My guess is you may find the arm broken.
A new arm is very cheap to buy and the job is quite easy, you just unbolt the six 10mm bolt heads (M6 thread) on the assembly and replace the link.
Mine snapped when I was on the top of the Wicklow Mountains, I jammed a piece of gaffa tape in to keep the selector engaged. If you don't jam it in as soon as you drive the link will jump out.
