300tdi auto timing belt

Hi all
Now time to do the timing belt on my 300tdi auto disco. anyone know how to lock the flywheel at tdc? I have done 200 & 300 tdi manual belts before but been told the autos are differant.

On the bottom of the flywheel houseing there is a plate on the rear,in the hole that is threaded you screw in a spring loaded pin.

would that be the same tool as the manuals? (3/16th drill bit in a wading plug)  :laugh:

The flywheel (as such) isn't as strong but the ring gear is in the same place, AFAIK it's the same tool.

Yes it is the same pin as used on the manuals, but you will fail to get enough tension on the crank bolt with a proper locking tool on the front, the autos just will not do it like the manuals.

I looked into buying one but couldn't justify the cost (about £90 last time I looked) so I looked at pics on the internet, took some measurements from the crank pulley and had my own tool made by a mate that teaches welding and fabrication in the local college.

If you are anywhere near Pembrokeshire then you are welcome to borrow.

Its not on the bottom like the manuals, its an "eye" shaped plate that is on the front face of the flywheel housing, if that makes sense?

if you are unlucky, some have the timing hole behind where the starter motor bolts on so you have to take it off  :sad:
there is no such thing as a problem , its an opportunity to learn
