MOT Fail... Help...
« on: July 11, 2012, 18:40:23 »
Just back from 2hr MOT... I think it took that long to write the fail sheet..

A bit confused by one point on it...

"Nearside front suspension has excessive play in a lower suspension ball joint" - Now when I tried to quiz them, they were about as much use as well you know what I mean... All I got out of them I think the swivel might need shims, the guy that knows these things is away... So guys... Any thoughts... as I need to get the parts ordered ASAP...

Just another thing... Do rear standard shocks come with new bushes or do you have to order them separately...

Tah muchly

Thanks Lam and Saffy!

I take it that its better to replace the whole lot rather than to mess about with shims etc???

Only got 17 items on the list... the best one... Passenger door wont open from the inside... how about trying unlock it you muppet! It makes me wonder how they managed to get there MOT ticket! 5 items of brake pipes... 2 marked dangerous... ball joint missing a pin and nut loose... I was sure I had put a nylock on there so will look at that this evening... a couple of bulbs and earth oh and the shocks and thats about it... easy if I can get all the bits for the weekend.... PANIC... its our only car at the moment... And yes I know I should have done this about a month ago..

Well it was only £27 so cant grumble at that side of it...

Is there any definitive way of checking whether its the wheel bearing or the swivel, as just been told it can be easily mistaken...

If it's a wheel bearing the play will be present front and rear as well as top and bottom, assuming the calliper isn't gripping the wheel.

You probably have to strip the hub off anyway so you'll know when you get to it.

Also, if the play is detectable with the car stood on it's wheels, a wheel bearing would give you a clunk as it climbs off one race or the other, if that makes sense.

Finally, if there are 2 of you you can feel the affected section underneath while an assistant rocks the wheel.

Lift the suspect wheel so it is just off the ground then with a decent sized bar and pivot see if there is any vertical movement of the wheel. It will feel like a clunk as it hits top or bottom.

kit will need shimming too, you have to set it up on the bench. Use a spring loaded fish weighing scales.... get peeved off and set to it *feels* right and doesn't snag when rotated back and forth.

One silly question... what size brake pipe... Ive got a load of ends in the Horse lorry but that means going outside... and fishing about there in the dark...
