Oil light flickering
« on: September 26, 2011, 08:40:28 »

Truck cab 90 with 300TDI engine. 1998. Regularly serviced.

Just dropped my little lad off at play school and noticed the oil light flash. Turned the engine off and checked the oil level which was fine. New oil filter and oil at last service about two months ago. replaced the oil warning sender switch but light still flickers. Goes from very dim to a bit brighter and seems to change when I go over bumps in the road. Have crimped on a new spade connector for the oil warning sender for a better connection. When I disconnect the oil warning switch the dash board light comes on full bright. Does this indicate an earth fault? where to check the wiring now is my question.

Any and all advice appreciated.

G

Have you considered swapping the sender unit?   It just screws into the block,  and then the crimped wire slides on.

How about temporarily fitting an oil pressure gauge and getting a proper reading and comparing to specifications.

Its a wiring fault somewhere. Replaced the sender and checked the oil pressure. The light flickers in time with the engine so looking for a wire in the engine bay that may be shagged.

Now the Brake light fuse keeps blowing!

Looks like I`m gonna be spending some time on the wiring loom ....

Well I rummaged around the engine and when I tugged on the loom that runs along the side of the block (offside between the air filter holder and engine) that cured it. so at least I now know the approximate location of that fault.

Regard the brake light fuse blowing. My mate found the fault. took him four hours with his sealy continuity tester and he had the clever idea if replacing the fuse with a big headlight lamp. when the fault was located it confirmed it by the lamp glowing bighter in place of the fuse that would have just blown. Thats a trick to remember. The fault was located in the wiring just rear of the reversing light swithch on top of the gearbox housing. It had just been rubbing. spose this will be quite common now for a vehicle thats nearly fourteen years old and vibrates like Defenders do!

Thanks for loking in guys.

Added to which the thin wall wire that LR were using by then goes hard with age and then gets ground away by any grit on the outside of the insulation.  I've also had a couple just snap with age!

Fixed the oil light flickering on.

The loom that runs down the side of the engine and Air Filter had a lot of slack at the bulk head end and was rubbing on the top of the Gearbox bell housing.

It was most annoying to say the least!
