300tdi Auto into a 2a?
« on: June 21, 2011, 17:17:43 »
Hi all,  I am thinking of putting a Disco 300tdi with Autobox into my 2a.  The original gearbox is knackered & engine is thirsty 2.25 petrol
Has anyone done this?
I'm guessing the rear prop is going to be short but as it's going to be used on road it's not an issue for me.
Any pointers would be helpful!
Many thanks  :afro:
Did everyone see that?  Because I will NOT be doing it again!

Not with a 300tdi but have done it with a 4.2 XK engine and auto box mated to an ashcroft adapter for the mounting of the transferbox.

Both props are likely to be requiring a swap as its unlikely either will be same lenth as they currently are.

You need to mount the Rad, Intercoolder and I'm assuming the autobox cooler so the front of the IIa will be needing some adjustment. I just fitted a 90 grill and bonnet on my conversion.

can be done, tdi conversion is quite easy, 200 even sits on teh original mounts an dbolts up to a series gearbox.  300 needs engine mounts moving. autobox has been done, but not by me, Jim Willy has had a couple of series autos so may be able to give pointers.

the 300tdi will sit on the original chassis mounts with a little creative thought and a remote oil filter

Would love to know how your doing this as I have a 300Di in my series 3 hybrid and I know for a fact that you have to make new motor mounts and relocate them. The RH side mount on the frame has to be remove to get enough clearance just to get the motor between the frame rails. Remote oil filter is not necessary for the front drive shaft clearance issues.

More info on my conversion can be seen here: http://www.tukojack.com/300di_conversion.htm

Cheers,
Todd.

take the oil filter head off the engine block and make up a plate that covers about 5 bolt holes on the engine, this plate also covers where the oil filter head sits and has the required barbs/connections for the remote filter, this plate also has the engine mount as part of it to allow it to sit on the original chassis mount

it has already been done by a series 2a owner, absolutely no need to chop the chassis apart from removing the battery tray or extending the legs and making it removable to give the timing chest clearance

i've not personally done this conversion as both my Series landies have 200tdi engines (88" bitsa and a 1965 109)

only time you "may" have to move engine mounts would be if you use a defender 300tdi engine as i think the timing chest is a different shape and may put the injector pump in an inconvenient place
it ain't broke ...

i ain't fixed it enough

Only 2 questions for you to consider:

1. how much will this conversion cost?
2. how many miles do ou do a year?
