What went wrong....?
« on: January 05, 2004, 22:07:19 »
Hi Guy's

I gave the engine bay a good washdown today, keeping water
well away from the air intake  etc   etc  ....

On my way home after doing about 5 miles I pulled away at the
traffic lights and lost all engine power, had to crawl over the lights on tickover,
I pulled up safely and the tickover was up and down all over the place..!!

As I reaved it the smoke out of the exhaust made me very worried..
After playing it alittle and trying to make my way home on tickover it
just burst in to life and is now running fine, I thought at the time that
the timing had sliped a tooth as the garage has just fitted a new timing belt..

So I can only asume I got water somewere I shouldn't of done..!!!!

The question is Where..... :?:

ouch, does sound a bit worrying that Paul

Reminds me of the problem I've just had with the wiring in the engine bay

Might just be worth in daylight to have a quick check of all the wiring you can see, earth straps etc.....

I think it's a problem with water getting somewere it shouldn't be
rather than a loose / broken wire, I will be giving a good look over in
the daylight and NOT washing the engine bay again..

It should have stored any fault codes that happened... might be worth a try but just be careful if they want to charge you an arm and a leg just to plug it in

Silly thought, but this happened to me when I was only 200 yards from the garage after picking it up following a service & steam clean.

Turned round limped back into the garage, the chaps came running across the forecourt with very worried looks on their faces, after lifting the bonnet the culprit was found, they had knocked the turbo pipe off with the lance, 30 second fix.

Have a look, it might just have worked loose.

Hi Chris

I spoke to the garage today, they are to busy at the moment,
It's booked in for next week and they are going to plug it up
Free of Charge... :D

I will post the outcome on here after it has been looked at..

Richard,

Thanks for the info, I have had a good look under the bonnet
today after Andys comments about earths etc...

All wiring looks as new and well connected
with nothing obvious standing out..

I will have a look at the pipe work around the Turbo tomorrow...

Erm....Paul...if yours is a TDi, the ECU won;t hold anything about the engine. It's just the body computer they'll be able to talk to. And that will say things like :

Ive got airbags! I've got windows, they are up/down, etc etc. There is *no* engine data stored anywhere for the 300 Tdi. The V8 petrol however.....has a separate ECU for the engine.

Thank's Neil,

Yes it's a TDI carn't afford a proper engine..

The garage say's they will hook it up and have a look
but as you say it doesn't look like they will find the problem
that way.... They want it all day and say they will be giving
it a good going over.....

On a good note it is running fine today... :D
