Spring shackles, nut?
« on: August 21, 2010, 10:22:51 »
Good morning!!  I were just about to start the search for my spring u bolts and nuts, plus the the bolts to locate the springs to the chassis, who good and who's not?  I went to cannock, in the series, from stourport, took me a bloody hour, only to find i need the casing number from the front to get the right ones!!  Got that now, got a sailsbury rear, so ready for the swop! Any help would be glorious!!  Thanks!!

I too find this strange!

If they asked what springs you were using it would make more sense.

All this text book stuff is all very well but after 30 years or so things get changed over. For example a stage one front axle casing is identical to a series 2/3 but a different part no.!!!Even the type of springs wont effect the u bolts. The shackels are only slightly different on the width(10mm) on the front on 1 tons. Most bits are interchangable.

That may be true but if you go to a parts suppliers, they need to give you the correct part otherwise they get grief (from folk like you, see your rants about Paddocks), they search for u bolts, it brings up a stack of different options. Unless you have one there to compare it with they're going to tell you to go and find out what axle you've got so they can give you the right ones. Especially as a lot of folk these days don't have the experience of series motors to know that the parts are pretty much the same.

i took my old U-bolts to craddocks  when i swapped axles on the front of my bitsa, the old U-bolts were too small to go round my new axle tube without a big hammer and then wouldn't go thru the spring plate and visually i would have said the axles were identical , they couldn't help me with replacements so i had to hunt down a spring manufacturer to help with replacements...

it seems that not ALL axles are quite the same...

i've a feeling that the axles on my lightweight chassis and my Aussie/New Zealand 88" (Chalkie) are going to carry different U-bolts to a standard Rover axle due to the reinforcing ribs on both of them
it ain't broke ...

i ain't fixed it enough
