Engines out, now those pesky wheels and axles
« on: May 22, 2010, 21:35:20 »
Thanks to the mudclub community (Rich, Paul and Dave amongst others)  I've extracted the engine and transmission from the chassis, so almost at rock bottom now! Just the axles and springs to take off (prediction: much grinding required) and then the chassis can go to the big scrapyard in the sky. One thing though- each wheel has a funny looking special wheelnut- like a round top hat disc and flange, with 4 holes in the flange. Presumably some kind of special tool is needed to undo it properly but what the heck is it?

Hi mate, sounds like a locking wheel nut,you could try some mole grips and even result to hammer n chisel. It is possible to weld something up to match the holes also.

Thanks Paul- those axles- they're not light are they?! I had the problem you said I would with the spring hangers; I got lucky and only had to cut 2 off the car.
cheers
Alan

Yeap, locking nuts.  If they are tight thenwekd an old wheelbrace into them, the heat hekps loosen them.

Here's a space-saving idea: cut the chassis into 10 pieces with a plasma torch (thanks Rich)- now my wife is much happier! :)
