LPG
« on: May 22, 2010, 18:52:09 »
The thing is, I have a V8, 3.9, RRC, and its brilliant, but, and it's a big but, it costs a fortune in petrol.  The latest price rises are just too much for me, and as I intended to keep the RRC for ever, I am looking for a solution (along with everyone else I suppose), to keep it going. So, do I go for gas, or do I have to buy a diesel Disco?
If gas, is it a good idea to buy a 2nd hand kit and fit it myself? I am handy with spanners, just a little concerned about the safety aspect.
Any opinions appreciated, as long as  I end up with a Land Rover I can use and not go bankrupt in!

I'd look at buying a decent kit new form somewhere like TinleyTech.  You can legaly fit it yourself and get insured without the need for a certificate as long as you declare the mod, you may be asked for an inspection by an LPGA installer, they charge an hour or so to do the checks.  my insurance didn't want the inspection but then I am a qualified engineer.

Fitting isn't dead easy but if you can strip a manifold, drill and tap the threads and refit then that's the hardest bit (assuming a multi-point) and mostly it's a matter of being methodical.

Setup for an ECU based system isn#t hard but needs a laptop (or long cables)

I would advise a multi-point of r a bigger V8, single point are ok but you will loose some power.

On LPG don't expect to match the MPG you currently get either.

Any system you get will include a tank with a 10 year test on it, be careful if you buy second hand that it has a decent amount of the left left on it, the date will be stamped onto a plate.

I don't have a cert for either my Disco or RRC.  We've had the Disco for three years now.  Never had a problem getting either of them insured (currently with Flux).  Flux seem happy as long as the vehicle had been through (and passed!) at least one MOT since the system was installed.

I'd agree, if it's a keeper.  I worked out that my £1,250 multi point systme would pay me back in 16,000 miles, which I've now more than done.  My car runs quieter, the fual burns cleaner which is good for the engine and the oil stays clean fo longer.

24MPG is about what a 300TDi classic will do, driven "normally".

I have lost some boot space[-X
Having found a boot0tank makes the RRC totally inflexible as a large-load carrier I spent the extra on my LSE and fitted an upright doghnut tank in the spare wheel well (a 235/70 barley fits anyway) and don't carry a spare unless I've got the caravan on (spare goes in there).

Loosing the spare makes up for the extra weight of the tank, I cary a can of gunk and a green flag card ;)

Once you know where the LPG stations are you learn to plan your journey appropriately.

One thing I notice though, the V8 sounds different on LPG :-k

Does it?  I never noticed that when I had mine ... but then again, I'm not an engineer.

MPG: I get about 28-29 out of a TDI where with a 3.9 V8 I used to get 16 on petrol and about 12 on LPG.  If you're keeping the car, LPG it - just don't crash it, like I did.

Gas it.

Our 110 is, my old 3.5 rangie was, my 4.6 classic is and my volvo t5 estate is!

I had underfloor tanks on my 4.6 to save space inside.

And yes they do sound different on gas :-)
