When was it built?
« on: April 25, 2010, 23:01:46 »
Can anyone tell me how to find out when my Series was actually built?

I need to find out as there were a number of part number changes during the early 80's and I don't want to be ordering the wrong stuff . . . .

VIN is SALLBAAG1AA191669 if it helps . . . . . .

Thanks
Simon

Only real way to tell is go to Gaydon and look at the despatch records on microfinche (for free, once you've driven there, and quite a fun afternoon - also get to find out the colour, key numbers, despatch dates/location and err, thats about it), or pay them to issue you a dateing letter (cheep but limited info), or a built certificate (more expencive and only gives the info listed above for a Land-Rover).

All VIN'd (SALxxx...) series 3's were given a sequential sereal number (last 6 letters), but the prefix code (first 11 digits) varied acording to model, sometimes issued in blocks of the same type but often in the order they are ordered, so prittymuch random - thus stage 1 could be built with the apropreate prefix and the next vehicle listed with the next serial number could be an 88 diesel its apropreate code, to make things more fun the 88 might have actually been assembled/completed first! - explains why the numbers get so high anyway.
The other thing that really screws things up is they didn't always issue the serial numbers in sequance, genrally they are in order give or take a couple of months (better hope its not too close to an important date like july 1980) but sometimes they seem to miss a number and come back to it a year or two later to fill in the gaps in the book - hence theres only 1 real way to find out! (I've seen the microfinches myself so I'm not making this up or relaying something I heard down the pub).

I do know the following 2 vehicles though,
117544 was built 9/6/1980 (though first registered nearly 2 years later so claimed to be an 82 model - thats the resion I went to check as it wasn't matching the parts book for an '82)
154215 was built 24/11/81
That gives 37000 chassis in 17 months, so asuming built rates didn't vary much (they might have), yours is about another 37000 on from 154215 so 'spring 1983' might not be too far off, though that'll be quite vague. Should earn it a Y plate if it wasn't hanging around too long at the dealers?

Glen,

The date info is really good, thank you.

Knowing that mine is from 1983 is a great help.  As you have found, there were a number of parts changes around 1980, which does make ordering stuff a bit of a lottery.  I'm going to need to keep a list of which bits are off the 1983, and which are from the 1972 car now . . . . . . .

Sent off the reg and VIN number to Gaydon Heritage Museum (details are on their website)
Think it cost me £20 but got letter back showing date of manufacture and that it was in fact tax exempt DVLA liked that one
