P38 Wheel Wobble
« on: December 03, 2009, 12:56:11 »
Hi

I'm experiencing wheel wobble\chimmer some of the time, feels like the wheels are tracking in grooves on the road...

Have changed all the track rod ends, etc, and checked all the other bushes, etc.

The wheels are L322 (MKiii) and I have fitted the correct hub spacers...

Going to check the balancing and also swap all the wheels around to see if it could be that.

Any one got any clues to what it might be?

Chris

Did you fit L322 wheel nuts as well as spacers ?

They were already fitted, but will check with Land Rover to see what's fitted.

Thanks

P38 do wobble and wander with anything over standard 16'' wheels. I have had 19'' from a later model. you do need the hub packers as L322 wheels sit on the studs and not the hub otherwise  --- not safe. My current 38 came with 18'' and on the roads around me the ride was awful, so refitting 16'' and now i have a smooth ride.
It is quite normal for them to tramline and wobble unless on 16''s.
Could you borrow a set off 16'' to try?

Check the tracking, IIRC the P38 should be toe out.

check for mud inside your rims, it will very easily unbalance your wheels.

also check top and bottom ball joint as they could be dry

now of at least two like this one on 16" the other on 18" rims

there was no play but when changed they where dry and rusted badly
