remove the gear lever gaitor to gain access to the top of the gearbox you will see a plate that holds the gear lever in held down
by four bolts. On that plate you should see two springs that sit against the lever. These could have gone weak?
If not then if you remove the four bolts you will be able to remove the plate complete with gear lever and see inside the top of the gearbox.
At the top you should see a hole that the lever end sits in which is held to the shaft by a grub screw, this often comes loose.Simply tighten the grub screw and rebuild.
It can be tricky getting the lever back in the hole(if so remove the springs that sit against the lever and remove the lever from the plate, then you can refit the plate first, then insert the gear lever into the hole and refit the springs). If after this there is stil some slop in the lever have a look to see if the springs have worn a groove into the lever,if so either get a new one orget someone to weld up the groove and file until smooth. After this it should be nice and positive.
I know it sounds long winded and a bit scary(especially if you haven't done one before) but if you take your time it isn't too difficult.

hope this helps
