your thoughts please
« on: October 24, 2009, 09:17:48 »
I have seen this landy on ebay from JohnCraddocks and was wondering what your views are please.
It seems alot of money for a s3 but with a new chassis and bulkhead it would be less to worry about for mot's surely?
How does a new chassis and bulkhead stand up for the tax exemption? I know there are wierd rules about points systems. could I fit a 200tdi engine with the points system sometime in the future?
cheers

As long as it's a new chassis and not a second hand one, you retain the registration and tax exemption.

Changing an engine won't cause you any trouble either.

However, it is a bit pricey as you say. Only you can judge whether it's worth it to you.... if you know what I mean.

For peace of mind it wont need welding in the future few years will be worth something as I could easily pay £500 on welding in 3 mot's!

How much though do you think it is roughly worth if it is a 100% new chassis / bulkhead?

Any way of proof of it being new? Seems funny as it has been dry stored for 17ish years and yet still needed a new chassis.

Personally, I wouldn't touch Craddocks with a barge pole.

My last dealing with them was about 18 months ago - I received a partial order. I contacted them on numerous occasions and they lied about the missing goods every time. I ended by sending them an email which said something along the lines of, "Is Craddocks a trustworthy and reliable company? If the answer is yes, then you will deal with this situation effectively, if not, please feel free to ignore me".

Guess what? I was ignored - draw your own conclusions!

Yeah, I dont think Craddocks are nearly as good as Paddocks, but with an item like this they can't do a part order thankfully. Or 1 would hope they didnt anyway!

But as a vehicle ignoring the Craddocks bit, what do you think?

You may regret saying that!

I have all the kit for a veg oil conversion too which I would like to do to a 200tdi engine in a s3! Would a 200td engine be better for the drive train? thats a whole new thread though

Is there anything else to look out for with a new chasis and bulkhead? It is a long time since I was in the series landy game so gone a bit rusty. Excuse the pun! And anyway of checking the chassis is new without seeing photos of it all being done. I doubt ohnCraddocks will have done the change. Seriously low miles on it too. I am quiet tempted!

got a reply from JohnCraddocks

they said

to which I replied,

Thanks for the reply. I have asked around on a few land rover forums and everyone bar 1 person has said it is well over priced. Appologies. If you get any other series 3 tax exempt in, in good condition for about £1500 which is my budget really, willing to go a bit more for the right one please let me know.
My friends advised me that your one for 3k should be on a galv' chassis so if it has been saved on money there, what else has been saved money on.
I am still tempted by yours. Can you add any further information or are you open to offers?
Regards
James

Hi,
We have been land rover specialists for many years, a galv chassis is not a land rover item. This vehicle is priced for a good example of a series 3 in standard spec.
Regards

A galv item is not land rover? Hmm well, funny how galv' chassis get fitted then in restoration projects! And I am guessing no to offers! lol I am VERY close to this weekend I have just reliased. I could go and look!

They get fitted in rebuild projects and sourced from third parties companies. Restoration implies factory specification which wouldn't involve a galv chassis because AFAIK landrover do not supply galv chassis as an option and therefore no LR part number for a galv chassis. I think that was what craddocks was saying, galv chassis is not a LR item.

Personal opinion, for the price it's finish is really not that good, looks like a tart up. Funny how a quick blat of nato paint can make even a pig pleasant to the eye. Look where the rear tow hitch is removed... Look at in inside of the roof panels... dash, pedals...Remember Craddock's have an endless stock of items like gear knobs, lamp lens, wheel sets, new number plate, splash of paint to even things out ...so 500 quid tart up (at most) of a fairly good base vehicle? Recent bulkhead/chassis could mean *anything*. The vehicle is 1971, a replacement chassis in the 1990's could be termed recent. So it would be important to know how old/miles that "recent" really means. For that money I'd want bulkhead and chassis to be as nearly as fresh as the paint and Craddocks bolt on shiny bits.

it wasn't a resto job, otherwise they wouldn't have fitted those god awful wheels.

Waaaaaaaay over priced for what it is, you could buy a truck and put it on a galv chassis for that kind of cash.

^^what chris said.

You can pick up a decent series 2a or tax exempt 3 for around £1000, then a galv chassis for £900, new doors and tops about £150,  plus another couple of hundred for odds and sods, then you've got a great car and had a good experience of building your own truck.

what about this one then?

hey, I think it's worth a look in the flesh and if the price is really right.... why not..

couple things though, says it's got siii bulkhead, yet also looks like it's had plate welding in upper corners? anywhere closer inspection needed there with a magnet ;-) Same with chassis in places, but really the photos do not smack out any concerns. So yeah worth a look in flesh, don't make mistake of buying/bidding without seeing. Looks like major stuff has been previously do for you (repairs/maintenance) and seller seems genuine enough.

That one looks more than worth the current bid.
