2004 110 TD5 clunk from rear diff

hi
something in my rear diff has packed in, alot of backlash (atleast 1/2 turn of prop), this can be seen by watching the diff underneath the car with someone else driving, and a loud clunk when i take off from a stand still and when i go up through the gears, its a 110 defender 2004 TD5 with 118k, is this a common problem you see with this kind of millage ? what could be causing this ?, any help would be appreciated as this is my first landy and i ve only had it for a week so i m still very much a learner in the Landy world

First thing to do is to drain the oil out and look at it.

Colour, Consistency, Taste (joke)

Stick your finger though the drain hole and poke about to see if you can find any bits / swarff in there.

If its a grey colour its water contaminated which probably not helped.

it should be a nice golden syrup colour.

1/2 a turn, really :shock:

I think something must have bust inside it or it's run with no oil for a very long time.

I'm not an expert on the latest Defender but if your has the Salisbury in the back you can take the cover plate off and have a good look inside.  Downside is you need to swap the whole axle or take it in to have it rebuilt I think, the diff is built up inside the axle.

If it were me I might be thinking about a 300 TDi axle if there is any difference, the newer LR products seem to be more expensive to fix, wheel bearings, things like that.

sorry, but if its a sailsbury axle id be more interested in looking at the halfshafts and drive members as this is what allways wares on them axles and causes a clunk

Dan, are they the same halfshafts as the Rover diff?

rears are bigger in diameter afink, but not 100% sure
however they are the 2 piece shafts so if they are the same as rover axles running 24spline you would require some nas spec shafts which are 24 spline at both ends
if the shafts and drive members are goosed, by the best you can afford as the britpart shafts are pretty crap and wear quickly as do there h/d ( toffee) drive flanges  :roll:

if it is the half shafts you will most likely find its the p38 rear axle (nothing to do with the range rover)
devon 4x4 supplied some for my vehicle (allmakes) which where 25% the cost of genuine but it did take them 2 attempts due to the lenghts of the shafts changing at some point during production so go armed with chassis no etc

thanks again for the replys

well i changed the half shafts and drive flanges (just went for brit part ones) and the clunck is still there :evil:, i was sure it was the shafts as they were very bady worn, the oil that came out wasnt that bad, it was dark but it wasnt stinking or anything, i think i m gonna have to get a new dif ?? what do you guys reckon

have you checked the A frame ball joint? or all the other bushes (A frame and trailing arms) ball joint can be a bit of a pig to change but a lot cheaper than a new diff!

thanks for the reply, i will double check the ball joint on the A frame, i gave it a quick prod and it seemed ok, the clunk doesnt sound like a bush or damper etc, it sound mechanical and it only happens when i realease the clutch ie engage drive

Have you had any luck finding the cause to the problem yet? Im experiencing the same sort of noise as you describe on my 90 and would like to get to the bottom of it.

When I got my 300tdi 110 it had a similar clunk upon drive from the rear axle (not a-frame ball problem and halfshafts/flanges replaced), not quite half a turn of backlash though but more than it supposed to be.

3 years on, many road and hard greenlane miles later and I am still waiting for the axle to break or even show sign of getting worse... I guess I just got used to not dumping the throttle on take off.

had this loads of times when i had 37" tyres its a bent pinion pin ,swap diff and it will be fine in the end i had ashcroft shafts and four pin  but still used to get problems so i used to rebuild my own diffs real cheap to do and not rocket science ;)

I have the same with 2003 double cab, spoke to my (who has 25 years in the LR business as a workshop owner) he said not to worry, they all do it  at some point and it happens alot with them, I said about checking/changing, and he said not to worry.
