Diff Help Required.....
« on: July 19, 2009, 13:07:33 »
Hi, I have replaced the prop uj's and i noticed that where the prop joins the diff there is about 1/4 turn before it stops. I take it that there is play in the diff. Is this a problem? and how can i fix it?

Regards

Matt.

If it is not noticeable when driving, don't worry about it too much and be gentle with the clutch. Easiest way to cure it is to slap a new diff in the front, but a good one with very little play.

Replacing the diff flange can help, as sometimes the splines on the flange are worn.

1/4 would not worry about on if u are getting half a turn. most of them will have 1/4 turn. you can also check it where the prop bolts onto shaft goin into the diff if that moves up and down ie has play in it

Particularly on the front it is a combination of wear in the diff, crown wheel assembly and in the splines and the CV joints, on a LR there are 6 splined drives in the front plus any wear in the CV, all of which adds up.
