« on: July 03, 2009, 12:58:16 »
friends of my brother have a shogun sport

driving down the motorway the diff seizes up they got recovered to a garage in Preston
and have been given a price for repair

£1100 for parts
£300 labour

i did drop into the conversation that if it was a landrover you could probably get a diff for £20 - £40
and fit it in a couple of hours

question is why is the cost so high

I do not know if that is a fair price or not, but if they do not want the work then they will price accordingly. My uncle will give a stupid high quote for a job he doesn't want to do on a vehicle and he says some still agree! Also I think there is scope for the possibility that if a vehicle is recovered to a garage then they might try it on with a high quote as the already stressed owner may actually cough it up there and then, the vehicle is right there after all and would be under pressure to get it moved from the garage or suffer storage fees, not sure how that work?

Wow, if that's the case, I wish I could earn that hourly rate..... A minimum of £100/hour or £200/hour if it's a rear   Nice work if you can get it

How on earth do Mitsubishi justify a price tag of over £1k for a diff?

I would just remove prop/half shafts as required and carry on untill I sourced a second hand one, but then the parts allown probably cost more than range rover is worth.

Woody, you can get a brand new genuine Land Rover Diff for a Maximum of £40!!!!!!!!

First thing would be to get it home; check it out themselves  or go to their local garage/mechanic they can trust.

Secondly check with Mitsubishi incase there was a recall for the faulty diff (doesnt matter how old the car is or if a grey import) in which case they would replace parts and labour is free.

If not the case source second hand parts, as i would guess this is a very rare case.

Price wise, new Mitsi parts can be rather silly, i have heard of a single nut and bolt being close to the £300 mark!!!!!!!!!!!!

And unlike Land Rover you dont find many copies of the original parts, apart from service items, standard shocks on Pajero's (electronic gas) are about £200 each. and that doesnt include the actuator!!!
1995 300tdi 90 rebuilt and on the road (but still a project)
1992 Pajero SWB 2.5 Auto (failed its MOT and for sale if you want it)

There are cases of the 'circlip' coming off thus allowing the shaft to move and empty the diff oil here, Mitsubishi have a new strong one thay are fitting here and replacing the diff

But i bleave its on the NM models only and only if you have a full service history
