Help please. my series 3 has a 3 bearing diesel fitted which I think is from a 2a. It starts well and on tick over and when building the revs up has no smoke at all but if I give it a quick blat on the accelerator a lot of white smoke comes out :O(

I've tried adjusting the pump ,admittedly not in every position , without success.

A couple of things that might be relevant.

It's fitted with a pre heat system,lots of wires and pipes.

Only has 1/4 tank of fuel which is probably a year old.

Any suggestions?

 White smoke is often water vapour.
 Check coolant level.
 Check for mayo in the rocker area, or on the dipstick.
 If OK, it could well be that you have contaminated fuel. (You did say it could be ancient) Might be worth draining the tank and putting some new in.

Thanks, the coolant level does drop but there is a hole in the rad ;O(

No mayo to be found so good sign there.


Thinking about it , one of the failures on the mot was no rubber seal on the fuel cap so the diesel is probably contaminated.

I'll drain it tomorrow and try again.

Going from the mention on the other thread about the seal missing from the fuel cap in the list of MoT failure points I would have to agree that it sounds very much like contaminated fuel.

As already said, drain it out and put some fresh in it.

Even if it doesn't cure it, at least it will rule out that being the problem and mean that you have some good 'juice' in it.

And sorry it's a bit late but, welcome to the world of Landy ownership.

also if its been stood for any length of time, it will probably smoke until everything has had a chance to 'bed ' back in

Hi

I have a 2.25 5 bearing diesel and had exactly the same problem fine on tickover slow build up of revs fine but give it a quick blast and the world behind you disapeared in a thick haze of white smoke.

Tried pump timing, confirmed injectors were ok, turned out to be the valve stem seals 2 of which had disintegrated and the others were well on their way.

Now when running on fresh diesel is sweet as. if however I run it on the diesel in the tank which I would imagine is at least a year old it occasionally coughs and puts out a small cloud of white smoke. ( water in Diesel I presume)
