Mods & Airbags
« on: March 02, 2009, 13:09:35 »
One of the things I'm thinking of doing to my Freelander is fitting a stronger bar behind the bumper, and then I can fit a recovery point to that - as demonstrated by Tornado Motorsports at the Donington show.

However, I don't know whether this will cause problems with the airbag system. The Freelander that Tornado had on their stand has had the airbag system removed. Whilst I don't intend ever needing the airbags, they're useful things to have.

I presume that it's a similar story when fitting an A-bar, and Land Rover endorses that as an official modification...

Any thoughts or experience?

I can't imagine the replacement of the ali bar would cause any problems with the airbags, but it maybe worth speakin with Dave at Tornado and gettin his take on it, after all he's fabbin up the new bar so should have a good idea what effect it would have on the crumple zones

Sounds interesting -  presume it'll fit a post-facelift model? And of course: how much? :)

Your airbag shouldn't be effected much by the bumper change as they are triggered by an accelerometer (will be in the airbag ECU itself usually mounted as close to the centre of the vehicle as possible) not by any impact device behind the bumper.

Now that list has got me thinking again  :-o

I know the Mantec kit has a very good reputation, and a price-tag to match. I'm wanting to upgrade the sump-guard / skid-plate too, so would the Mantec one kill two birds with one stone? Or would I need both?

As for the exhaust guard, I seem to lose out here because I have a tow-bar and they don't seem to allow for them  :?

Can't see the pictures at work (firewall), but will have a look tonight from home.

Freelander is due for replacement very soon so busy removing all sorts of bits

As for garage - I already have Disco V8 auto (offroader) and 1954 series 1 in process of rebuild (with a V8) but both of those could be for sale as I am losing my storage place :(

Just remembered - got 5 16"alloys with BIG AT tyres (205 16) for Freelander (tyres prob done 300 mile max)

The Mantec exhaust guard can be fitted to a standard towbar with some minor modification. T8BUB on the FLC website did it.

Personally never bothered with the exhaust guard as standard box is extremely tough and, if the worst came to the worst, would be cheaper to replace than the cost of a Mantec guard. The guard also reduces ground clearance! Are you running a Diesel? If so, then why not just junk the rear box altogether and run a pipe straight out the side of the bumper  :D

I know about the ground-clearance issue, but a lift is also part of the plan so it won't be too much of an issue.

It is a diseasel, so that's another option - thank you :)
