deisel to petrol
« on: June 04, 2008, 12:55:02 »
I'm new to series landies so a bit of info please.

Can anybody tell me if the 2.25 deisel and petrol use the same block and different heads , reason for asking just bought a lightweight with a deisel unit but log book says petrol as does the vin plate. the head is only placed on as if somebody has tried changing it.

 Any info would be great.

Hi 3 landies (good number of em i say!)
pretty similar design but lots of lil differences, no-one would bother changing a petrol to diesel really just dropped a new lump in it and not changed books! are there not the 3 bolts holding the head down then?

They share the same blocks (both 3 and 5 bearings), same timing cover and timing chain assembly too I think.  Same sump as well.  The differences begin with the crank, the head is different and other lots of little bits.

But, in theory, it is possible to convert a 2.25 Petrol into a 2.25 Diesel and vice versa!  Why would anyone want to do that though is a bit of a question in its own right...  :-k

the lightweight i just bought should be a petrol but somebody has tried converting it, head is placed on with no hoses and exhaust not connected makes me think block was petrol.

If you could provide the engine number on the block, it will immediately tell us if it is a petrol or diesel block you have. The number is stamped just behind the water pump near where the inlet and exhaust manifolds should be.

most very likely is a diesel has just been put in, loads of series are improper set-up and run with no rocker breather to carb, is it the right cover? does she run? new gasket, 3 top bolts n rubbers and might as well do tappets whilst there.

Motors prior to the Series 3 didn't have any breather recirculation systems fitted from the factory.  :P

yeah i said that badly, i mean ones with webers blanked off, and rocker breathers just pumping it out!

It doesnt run and dont think it ever has as a deisel, no head bolts no rocker cover bolts and no injectors think it was one of those start but dont finish projects

If thats the case you might be better off buying a working diesel lump or petrol if you want!, could be cheaper n easier!?

Found several cheap complete lumps both petrol and deisel but would mean travelling the length of the country to get them and in a TD5 disco thats not cheap

Cheers for the offer but just purchased a petrol unit along with an oil cooler , radiator, gearbox and steering box for a grand total of £62 off eblag, so its back to petrol for this little lightweight.
