Help with buying a surf advice desperately needed
« on: March 17, 2008, 20:09:03 »
Urgent- Newbie desperate to join the surf flock -question!

Just about to sell my hatchback and found a second hand surf after following the advice from kind folk on here. I think it looks like a great deal so want to jump on it if it is

I'm not mechanically minded at all so would really appreciate some advice

It is a 94 surf 3l auto

Mileage 95k

some service history

Bit of rust

Seller says the one bad point is there is a 'bit of a clonk' on one of the front driveshafts which he thinks may need replacing in the future (is this expensive?)

Taxed for a couple of months

MOT until September

No tow bar so I guess its not been hauling anything

3 previous owners

new head recently

£1599

Is there anyone near brighton,  mechanics or anyone on here I could pay to come and check it over with me? Not got much money but would be happy to pay someone with more knowledge than myself. It would be either Wed/Thurs or Fri morn

Also some general surf q's

What should I look out for generally with second hand surfs?

What sort of mileage will Surf diesels go to?

Should I aim for 2nd or 3rd gen surfs?

Thanks so much, hopefully I'll soon feel like more

I'd suggest you sign up to the UK Hilux Surf Forum

http://www.hiluxsurf.co.uk/forums/index.php

and ask the same questions there.

The 3.0L TD is the engine of choice- more robust than the 2.4L.

Mines just gone through the 200,000 barrier this morning and still sweet as a nut (touching wood!).

Hi pnuk ive got 3.0lt manual surf , its the dogs will go anywhere offroad, got 1.5" body lift to get 32" mud tyres on without catchin body work, and 1.5" spring lift, my surf is in garage at mo, with front diff prob' , secondhand one approx £200, if you can find right one (size, ratio etc )which i couldn't so ordered parts coming from Japan £550 plus labour approx £360, but it is a good price for 3.0lt and year , so your choice, personally if like me you're not to mech' minded i'd get an AA inspect' or get a mech' to look it over, hope thats helped also look on Hiluxsurf forum as laser jock said.

I went to look at a 3.0ltr L-reg yesterday with pnuk, and he should be picking it up tomorrow, it's a SSR-G with Recaro interior and sunroof, nice looking motor apart from the usual rusty quarter bumper and will need some tyres soon, but the price was bloody good.
