Bunnie is right. Paracetamol suspension will help (calpol 6+) or Ibuprofen suspension.

I had mine done a very long time ago...... I can tell you that we were actually given cornflakes not ice cream, supposed to make it heal quicker or something!

I had one about 3 years ago. It was the most horrendous pain I have ever had, but it does get better and is well worth it once fully recovered.

I was told to try and eat a normal diet as the chewing action helps the healing process - however that is much easier said than done as at the time I was having big problems even swallowing my own saliva!!!

But hang in there - it does get better, just take loads of painkillers and rest.

Mine were taken some 49 years ago :-# I was very very very young at the time ;)

My sister was aged 19 when her's were removed and adults go through a tough time after the surgery. I do not envy you in any way at all :-. I wish you well and a speedy recovery :)

Had mine removed in my twenties.  Best thing in the world.  [!Expletive Deleted!] of a sore throat for a week but you only have to remember that you aren't going to get tonsilitis aver again...

Lots of toast and crisps was the order of the day too.  Damn uncomfortable but you do get through it, honest.

It is worth it.

Mine were whipped out when I was in my early twenties. The best thing about it was the anesthetic! That was freaky! I was told to eat toast and cornflakes to get rid of any crappy bits left on the wounds. I had tonsilitis type symptoms for two weeks after the op, which hacked me off, as I had planned to go to a big airshow, but couldn't.
I don't know if whisky helped, but it certainly took the pain away!

I still have mine for now but..........

I have been told, 1 more bout of tonsilitis and they are going. I have only ever had tonsilitis once and I got an absece on the tonsils too to make it even worse. All I could get past my throat for 6 days was a carton of orange juice at a very cold temp. Doc soon got me into hospital for abesece to be sorted out. Serious pain for 5 mins but the great thing was how fast the pain went. Ever thought, I wish this pain would go right now. Well that is what happened.

Another plus side to the tonsilitis was as it was thw worst the doc and the hospital had ever seen they got a few great looking trainee nurses in to have a look. One felt so sorry for me she even stayed back to hold my hand whilst abses was being sorted out  :D (wish I got her number!)

I wont go into how abses was removed. It is a story not for the faint hearted.

So reading the above posts, I am hoping even more to never get tonsilitis again as the removal of them sounds nasty pain. (sshhhh dont tell the doc I have it right now but not as bad a pain  ;) )

BEING POSTED BY HUBBY
Had mine removed aged 33 - had suffered years of pain, and it had got to the stage where I couldnt breathe and was suffering tonsillitus every Month, Went to theatre @ 9am, and at 12 midday i was eating sandwich and drinking tea (took me 3 hours mind you), only had the painkillers they gave me when i was wheeled into theatre (inc a suppository ) I was back home next day and eating normally within a week - although I cant stand spicy food now , woman who went to theatre after me was having pain relief every 2 hours and refused to eat - she stayed in Hospital for a week!!! - 1 word of advise get a good laxative as the anaesthetic makes you VERY constipated   and eat NORMAL foods - and also drink LOts of liquids ( try to stay away from ice cream as If anything goes wrong the numbing effect of ice cream can cause all sorts of problems, Best thing I ever did was have em ripped out -  literallyy as the usual clamping process didnt work, so i have clamp cut and stitch!!!!!

i have read about toast making it heal quicker but hospital said nothing about it, didnt offer me ice cream either mind!liking LSP's pain relief idea of whiskey tho!just done a really stupid thing and got a torch and had a look   :'(  lets just say where the tonsils were is now not at all pretty!think its psycologically made the pain worse!
feeling a little better today although pain is still pretty high on the scale!good to hear some positive experiences of after recovery!hoping its going to be worth all the pain and time off in the end.
