I can understand someone wanting to rebuild their own Disco if they have the time and a well equipped workshop, but I don't know how they can justify paying someone to do it for them...

Well i did say on my first thread that i was building it for a GOOD friend, so money isnt the issue in this case, i do have a well equiped workshop and some spare time, and the pure talent  :D  to do the job,

The motors being used for pure off road pleasure, and pleasure im sure it will be, good luck to chris w and all who sail in her, its been a pleasure to work on and got me a few new customers to boot,

Mick has worked blooming hard, his welding is better than first class and his knowledge of things mechanical is limitless! From an initial discussion and forming of a plan she's come a long way (and bitten both of us on occasion when the work got a bit tough).

If anyone needs any work doing on their motor (and not just Land Rover's) I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Mick's services.

It's taken a bit longer than hoped what with other work, bugs and buses    some very very late nights and long weekends but the final outcome is more than worth it, thanks boss  =D>

First of all I'd like to say a huge thank you to Mick for all his time and hard work getting (Ruby) Bettie sorted out for us.  
I can honestly say I have never ever seen anybody work so hard and some nights so very late or should that be early? (Getting home at 3am!!) and all with a massive smile on his face  :D .
At the beginning we knew Ruby had a few 'problem' areas and we were aware that the chassis had a bit of a wiggle on it BUT until you take all the carpets out there's no way of knowing just how bad things are.  
Mick assured us that "it's all fixable" and he should know!  
So during lots of long days and late nights, cussing and laughing (lots of laughing :lol:) we all, even the kids set about doing what we could and I have to say I think she looks brilliant!!

Thank you ChrisW for deciding to keep Ruby :)

Finally thanks to everyone who have posted such nice encouraging comments it's good to know there are other genuine Land Rover mad people out there  :D

6X9's IN THE REAR, TELL ME HOW....  :P  :P  :P

I've got 6x9's in the rear of mine too
I had to remove the panel, then remove the original metal work that holds the 5" speakers.
Then i cut the new holes in the trim to 6" round
Then i made some pods out of 1" mdf board and painted it grey
Then i could fit my 6x9's (which have massive magnets, 300w!!!)
Sounds great too
My only disapointment, still not that much bass from them due to the lack of space they have to work in.
Hence why i now run a sub woofer

One goes another enters, new build a series 3 88" on to a disco chassis, TDI power,and a few more mods as we go on im sure, should be delivered this week from sunny milton keynes, Full build will be posted im sure, looking forward to it,  :D

how have you fixed the rear panels in? mine are like pieces of damp rivita, and wont hold themselves in place, let alone a speaker!

Never seen this thread before and thoroughly enjoyed it.  To watch a craftsman at work (be it only in pictures) is a real pleasure – thanks for taking the effort to post the pics – you are a credit to the MC site.  Well done.

May I ask what may be a stupid question (though you don’t know until you ask!)?  The time, effort and skill you have put into this project is phenomenal (thank god for spell-check!).  I know this restored gem will last a fair few years (if treated well), but could some of the steel sections have been made from stainless?  Imagine if you never really had to worry about the front inner wheel arches again!  Just wondered if it was the cost of materials, lack of stainless items available OR if mild and stainless steel just don’t mix!  If it’s the latter – why don’t the mix (is it a weak joint or does the mild steel take extra punishment from corrosion?).

But once again may I say superb and thanks for posting.

Many thanks for the kind words mick, on the stainless point, the mixing of two metals is fine un less your welding them, welding mild steel to stainless is not an option, as the mig wire is ether stainless or mild,it will weld but wont give a good strong joint, stainless is quite brittle, good idea thou, would save the cill from rot,.... :D

Sorry mate just noticed your post from the other nite, Your right i dont sleep much, thats got to change,im spending far to much time in the workshop, think the time has come at 6pm times up no more customers,


As for the panel thing, a nice ring of MDF sorts out the depth problem in the rear, as for the panels, change them for newer items.... :D

thats a really nice looking motor  8)  well done on the rebuild lots of hardwork and well worth it by the look of it. almost a shame to go greenlaning now and get that nice paintwork all scratchy
