not much to report today, apart from after filling it up with oil again the leak persisted which leads me to belive its the oil main seal :( engine or gear box out again! chopped out one of the inner wings, dispite the debate on weather they are mot testable.
in the prosess i found a better place for my air box! yay! we like it when this happens.

More pics needed mate, how does the pipework fit, can you get filters in and out, do you just remove it when it needs changing, how is it attached. As I told you the other day, I'm looking to relocate mine so this might be just the ticket.

One thought, looks close to the exhaust maniflod, is it close enough to get hot? That wouldnt be good for performance methinks.

stu, it is a 300TDI defender air box that you need to do this. all the piping is 3" bore so air flow is a little better, it being close to the manifold did not occour to me i may have got my self into a little trouble :-k you have to remove the EGR valve. not just blank it off like i have seen some people do but remove the lot then it fits niceley. more pics later im leaving now.

i hate the colourfull spaghetti! :evil:

chopped the other wing out. re fitting the fuse box in the cab with me which should keep it out of harms way. header tank is moved to where the battery was....not sure weather that will work very well as its dropped by about an inch. the battery i had plans to go in the cab with me but luckily i called my dad up before i did anything drastic (he used to build/race caterham 7s) he said that there would be no problem with that if the battery is sealed.....which mine isn't.
had already pulled the ....um....red battery lead around the back of the engine(where it disappears) along the gear box and out the 2ND hole in the gearbox tunnel where the LHD hand brake would fit. now going to buy some more cable and mount it in the truck bed. will make a nice box out of the stupid box my grinder came in!
in the proses of thinking i can putt the batt in the cab i cleaned it out and took out the carpet. now looks alot better and doesn't have that smell that ALL discovery's have!

Hi, what is the purpose of removing the inner wings?, also are you leaving the battery tray bit in as thy are the bit that gives the most greif with tyre fouling :?

there are a few reasons, the main reason was because they were rusty and i couldn't be botherd to replace/knock up patch panels. there have been a few other benefits from this such as weight loss, easeyer to work on various things in the engine bay and the learning curve has been almost vertical...as a rule of thumb i don't play with electrics...i see all the colours in a tangled mess and i fall to the floor and have a fit :lol: but this way i have had to move allot of things and replace a few bits and i have learnt allot.

i am aware that the battery box causes the most problems but it isn't a problem at the moment, I'm only running baby tyres but when i get the bigger rubber on there will be more dicking about with the front end!

My mate has put bolt in pannels in to replace his inner wings on his SJ. You might want to consider this because when I bought mine they had rust holes in and the whole engine bay gets covered in crap, makes it really nice to work on!

The replacement front inner wings for mine were designed to fit on earlier RRC where the front wings were origionally bolted on. I still had to weld the front of the replacement pannels on as they were on part front inner wing assemblies, but I bolted them to the bulk head which was easier than welding.

One down side with this, its possible to spend more on replacment inner wing assemblies that some RRCs are worth. The other is I haven't seen wing replacements pannels for discoveries so you would probably have to addapt RRC pannels to fit instead.

The YRM one look like just a repair section



The SPI ones I got were more like pattern parts (complete with bigs like the brake line mounting bracket) than repair sections


And like I say for a RRC you can get prety much the a hole new front end to bolt on

but it will cost around £260 for the privalage.

i used RRC inner wings on my disco, i removed the RR headlamp boxes and used the disco ones :)

i wouldnt run without inner wings...would be ok if you want to plant some vegetables on the engine after an offroad session :lol:

your intake temps wont do your performance any good either with the airbox there....it will be acting as an interwarmer :grin:

i,d move it back if i was you ;)

thought i had better do an update as i haven't posted on this in a while. no pics for you though! you'll have to wait (that's if you still care and haven't excommunicated me!).
battery is all in its new place, wired up and works fine.some of you may be thinking why has this taken so long, well i am STILL useless with the colourfull spaghetti! i hate it i don't like it and it doesn't like me, I'm still raging a war over the rear lights which refuse to work! which is annoying because the nas lights i had on there for all of 30 mins worked fine. helped the girlfriend move house too, amazing how much crap you find out you have when you move! worked out quite well for me though. i got a perfectly usable table out of it...now my work bench, for the first time in the build i no longer have to measure/mark out/ cut/shape/weld anything on the floor huzzah! also got a bench grinder to go with my new work bench so no more death defying stunts with the little 4" grinder and most importantly i got a vice! i never realised how much you use a vice until i didn't have one! its a propper one too 7" inch jaw and a leaver thing to make it slide and of course its about 25 years old so it was made back when they made things properly! all good stuff. also i would like to add i think i have finally got the hang of this filling lark. i have painted the front and rear Axel in anthracite plasticoat....which i didn't like so I'm off to halfords tomorrow for some matt black.
moved my passinger seat an extra inch forward(all it would allow) because my co-driver to be is quite short in the leg, so should be a bit better for her.
managed to take a big 'ol' gouge out of my god damn fuel tank as well! this angers me! but you cant see it so i don't have to deal with the shame!
i am finalising my plans for bigger and better things too. i know what I'm doing, i have a plan and I'm not telling anyone!bit sick of people telling me things that may not necessarily be true...... i know what i mean!
we already have big big plans for next year....not telling those either, not because its a secret but because i think its funnier in my own little way this way :lol.
i haven't slept in 2 days and i think its beginning to show, its taken me about 45 minutes to write this out and i get the order of the letters muddled up easy. thank god for spell checker.... it is also quite difficult to remember what i have done to the truck when I'm this tired. it is not good. i got to try to get some sleep, i got to get the truck ready.

small update. dameras gone doolally so 90% of the pics i have taken over the past few weeks are really really blurry. thinking about selling the body and starting over with the rolling chassis. everey "james blunt" is making a disco truck.....dont do fashion. but we will see.
