Is it possible for a Steering pump, to 'over pump'???

Just as above really, had the original box lower seal fail about 4 months ago, fitted a recon box, that one managed about 300 miles beofre a leak appeared, and today, after a mere 100 miles or less on the latest box, this one has blown the bottom seal right out of the casing....!!!!!

Any help would be appreciaited, as it's now driving me nuts!!!

gone from 200tdi.... to 300tdi... still with loads done to it, in fact, even more than the last truck...LOL!!!

Simple answer, yes.  Commonly the pump is regulated by the sping pressure holding one or both side plates in place, if it over-pressures the side plates lift away from the rotor allowing by-pass withing the pump.  If you hold it on full=lock this is the whooshing noise you hear, it also heat s up the fluid.

Another possibility is that many recon boxes do not have a new output shaft and as this is the part that wears, along with it's bearing then pretty soon they can start to leak, the wear in the shaft/beaing is often the first cause of the leak before the box is reconned.

Anyone notice how many NEW boxes are for sale these days?

That said I bought a recon from Paddocks 3 years ago and it's mint even with the abuse I give it.

Thanks RRB, so, i should have just bought a new box then, and not pi55ed about with a recon one then...... why do they call them recon, if they're not?????

How can i tell if there's something wrong with my pump????

Well, i worked out that the lower seal on the box is secured with a circlip, so, i removed the drop arm, and the circlip and outer seal fell off...... so i tried in vaine for about 5 mins to refit it from below, failed, and so removed the box, and eventually re-fitted the seal with circlip fully engaged in its slot.....

Put it all back together, started the engine, turned the wheels from lock to lock, and wallop...... the bloody thing popped out AGAIN..... so, back to plan A....... wait for a call on monday and no doubt yet another replacement box.... ARSE!!!!

How can i tell if the bypass in my pump is working?????

One way to test the bypass valve it to connect the pumps output to a pressure guage and compare the measured value to the maxium system pressure according to the book.


A friends steering box started leaking, it turned out there was enough wear/mis adjustment in the box that as the steering wheel was turned it moved the box output shaft up and down, creating a large gap apperaed around the bottom seal creating a seriously bad leak as it was driven.

A recon box should last a lot longer than a few hunderd miles.

Only just noticed, 4 months holy cow, I'd be taking that one back.

Basically iof the internal pressure relief isn't working something will bust open, liquids are pretty much incompressable, it's whether the pressure is correct or not.  I'd be looking at the steering box though as No.1 suspect here.

Thanks RRB, i rang Paddocks yesterday, but NPS were closed at that time, so i have to wait til monday for some answers!!
