As it says on the tin really.

I've a few issues that need to be sorted at the moment such as gearbox oil seal, steering box etc.
When looking around for replacement parts there is sometimes a huge difference in price. But is there a huge difference in quality?

Sometimes its the opposite, been quoted £2 ish for an input shaft oil seal from James Edwards, St Helens today. Why bother going elsewhere but my wheel bearing kit cost £60.

Kind of prompted by a post about buying cheap paddock discs for £12 a pop and who cares if they last 2 years and another post where people described paddock water pumps lasting a couple of months.

What do you guys fit?

I assume its a mixture but which items do you insist on being Original Parts?

Service items (oil/fuel filters etc) I stick with OEM, brake pads and discs I use branded makes (Ferodo last time), front shocks I used a branded (not OEM) make from my local car parts place. On the 110 I did the rear trailing arm bushes - used OEM as they came highly recommended, but they are harder to fit than some of the replacements available.

The rear diff input seal (pinion seal ?) is leaking badly on the Disco - I'll be getting an OEM part to replace that.

I guess in general, anything that should be made to a high tolerance (bearings, seals etc) I go for OEM, and anything that's a bolt-on replacement (shocks for example) I'll go for branded well-known pattern parts.

Bearings, ring Paddocks but insist on Timken or SKF, £7 each

Seals, the Britpart ones will do the job is the stub axle isn't corroded.

Disks, you pays your money.  They alwys tell me no-one ever comes back to complain about the £12 each ones, well after a year it's not worth the fuel to take them back.  I have had problems with them. I ask for branded.  The LSE is on EBC pads and disks.

Plugs I fit GKN, air filter K&N

Oil filter OEM, oil I buy Lucas oils from my mate on E-Bay.


Propshaft UJs I have used Britpart ones but the rubber doughnuts whant to be the GKN/OEM part, my britpart one lasted months.  Some folks like to use GKN UJ kits too but it's not a tough job.

Dizzy cap and arm, OEM becasue LUCAS (electrical) is no more and the parts in Lucas boxes these daysd could be anything, hunt around for genuine (stanped on the part) or buy from a specialist who will vouch for the quality, DO NOT buy Halfrauds parts, enough of us have had trouble with them already.
