I'm looking at purchasing a cheap discovery for about £1000 to use off road.  Is there anything I should look out for on theses models and which is the better engine to go for.

if mpg isnt your thing then the V8 is bombproof - and usually the cheaper option - if you live in the real world then the Tdi is the 'sensible' choice - the Mpi had a bad rep - but isnt a bad engine - just a little underpowered for a 2.5 tonne vehicle..usual trouble spots are - boot floor - inner wings - sills - clonky gearboxs - and the leaky sunroofs - and alpine windows that usually affect early discos.
3 doors are cheaper than 5 doors as 3 doors are a pain to get young chioldren in and out of..I speak from experience!!!!!!
make sure the Tdi has had the belt changed - and serviced regularly.

I would go for a tdi, as there are some good fords in your neck of the woods, and they dont mix with V8s to well!
