What The Industrial Revolution Did For Us
« on: October 05, 2003, 00:57:23 »
As a follow on from my 'Seven Wonders of the Industrial World' thread, here's a bit of news about a new TV series.

Commencing on Tuesday 7th October on BBC2 is a series about the cause & effects of the Industrial Revolution, this will be presented by Dan Cruickshank (House Detectives, Britains Best Buildings, Return To Iraq)

It will cover such diverse subjects as  Stevensons Rocket, medicine, technoology of warfare and the development of urban living.
The 'kick-start' of progress such as iron founding, Canals, railways and mechanisation should be touched upon as well.

Sadly it is only a 6part series. As much as I like Fred Dibnah and consider him 'the master' of this subject, I think Cruickshank will do well as he'll look from the scholarly angle

Yes it looks like a good one Tina.
About time someone at the BBC 'bit the PCbullet' and did one on the 'Social & Technological Impact Of The Motor-Vehicle', just don't have all the 'tree-huggers' on it

I reckon Clarkson, Fred Dibnah, Vicki Butler-Henderson,and Claire from 'Salvage Squad' ought to present it

simon seemed to think that this series had already started, but I think he's confusing the snippets that Adam Hart Davies is doing at the moment.

Mr H-D is currently being repeated in 10minute segments (30minutes on Sundays) of 'What The Victorians Did For Us'.
Last one I saw was about Lord Armstrong & Cragside - his house at Rothbury  (Northumbria)
Whether the BBC is playing upon the association factor, but it also works in opposition as viewers will think in the same way as 'Hubs'

The series kicked off this evening and it was really fascinating.  Having lived not far from the china clay pits in Cornwall for a couple of years I never knew they used water to mine it.

I was confused at one stage as to where the thread was going but in the end it completed the circle very nicely.

Look forward to next week - although I will probably be on bed duty
Cheers, Simon

Too right! After working all day, coming home and cooking dinner and bathing the kids, I put the little one to bed whilst he watched it!
Is it repeated anywhere you think?

Haven't had chance to watch it as 'little 'un' had 'dual point ejection' last night, taped but not watched.

That's as well as some thieving bast**ds trying to nick my caravan, got a phone-call at about 15:30 from the chap who's land it's stored on.
He'd been out with his son to pick up a Ford Transit, on return the gate was open. So they went in and there was a Land River (of all things!!) parked in front of my 'van.
On seeing Chris approaching all 3 calmly got into it & drove off waving at him.
They'd had the oxy-acetelene torch on it & had cut through both wheel-clamps, wound all the corner-steadies up, handbrake off & must've been disturbed whilst finishing the hitch-lock off as it was partially cut.

BASTIDS!!!!!!!
So it neccesitated a quick dash to 'WandaHomes' at Ferrybridge for a new clamp.Picked it up, went to the till. In my rush I'd left my wallet at home.
B*gger!!!!!

So I went to where we bought the 'van from, phoning SWMBO en-route & she gave plastic details & it was ready when I got there.

So it's been moved this afternoon to storage elsewhere.

Two minutes more & it'd have been gone.

Not a good day at all :(

Managed to watch it earlier this evening, very interesting - if a little circuitous with the Tea/pottery conections.

I look forward to the forthcoming 5 episodes with interest.

I'd keep an eye on BBC3 & 4 over the next few weeks Tina.
This evenings episode was about the introduction of James Watts steam engines, and the improvements in terms of condensing (in particular) that he refined. Plus his association with Matthew Boulton.

Also featured was Cromfords Mill, near Matlock.

Jacquards card system for cloth patterns was another featured item, being really the forerunner of machine-code and subsequently computer programming.

You really missed a treat.

Get someone to phone you just before next weeks programme starts.

it's not that I forget, it's just that the kids are too young to appreciate it. Also, I'm on a huge guilt trip at the moment because I seem to be away from home more than I'm here, so when I am, I try to spend it with them, not watching TV. At least whilst they are awake

I worked in a cotton mill between o & a levels and even have a towell i helped make; I think Jacquards were used in that. I'd have to ask my sister; i was merely a creeler - putting the bobbins on. She and my mum (now dead) were warpers - who controlled the patern. Actually, my aunt and uncle worked in the mill too, so they should know.

Dang!
Missed most of tonights episode.
I just caught the last 7-8minutes where Dan Cruikshank was looking at the anatomical displays.
Some very nice models in there of all your musculature, arterial system, skeleton, plus some sectioned heads, etc....

All plastic/fake, for the squeamish out there.

I'm given to understand that the body of the programme would be about Edward Jenner, the pioneer of vaccination.

Have to keep an eye on BBC3 & 4

Tuesday, Tuesday...?
Can't even remember what I did Tuesday evening. Oh, yes I can! Went to my local GLASS meeting and met some more Mud Clubbers!

Phew! That's a relief. Thought my memory was finally failing me
SSign of either advancing age or over work. Probably both :)
