"I can't hear a word your saying"
« on: October 07, 2004, 20:53:55 »
I've been on a bit of a mission over the last couple of weeks to make my defender quieter  :!: I've removed the transmission tunnel and floor sections and refitted them with sealant. I've cut up a large rubber boot mat and glued it around the seatbox, which looks quite smart
Also I have sealed all the holes in the battery box and put some new seals on the access hatches under the seats.
It is alot better than it was but I still feel it could be quieter. Has anyone got any simple cheap mods to reduce road noise etc.
The noise I seem to be hearing is the engine  :-k
Its a 1994 90 200 tdi HT by the way.

My 90 had a sound deadening kit on it when I got it.  The underbonnet stuff fell off the first time I went off road, but it had been on since 1996, previous owner only used it on road and occasional run across a field for work.  It still has soundproofing under the rubber mats on the floor and all over the seat box and it's the quietest defender I've been in.  Worries me though cos when the bearings go in the gearbox I won't hear them :D
It's not a real car unless it's over 30 years old!
Classic cars are the ones who's owners wave to each other. I just bought a pretend car! F plate 90!

Anyone got any experience with it ???

(Unlikely to be cheap though!!

Noisekiller stuff is good from what I know of them, have spoken to them on several occasions...

why they changed their name is anyones guess.

as daft as this may sound, the "main" sources of noise transmission are the bulkhead itself (a large vertical sheet of metal :) ) and the roof...

make sure the roof is both lined, and that the lining will reduce the vibration too, since that's a huge rattle panel.

The disco has something like the weight of a passenger in sound dampening glued to various parts of the engine bay,  which is around the only reason it's quieter.

An under bonnet kit would likely help a lot...

Thanks datalas

When time permits I will try and quieten down the beast, the only underbonnet kit existing at the moment is a bit of mud, don't suppose that has much effect. (What is the dB rating for mud anyway).

Like your other suggestion though, I just have to decide which of my passengers to use as a soundproofing kit, yougest son comes to mind.  Well, probably not, he's 6'-4" and 18 stone - (could be overkill), besides he is my best assistant where heavy lifting is called for.
Seriously though, there is a headlining in the defender it's some sort of felt thingie..., thought some of the noisekiller liquid might help.  Anyone out there used it??

Cheers

although the use of ear defenders can be slightly worrying to other road users, maybe the fitment of an intercom may help,it did for me,ive just got to remember to turn (V8_redline_4500) down when sittingon the startline

Thanks for the advice  =D> chaps.

Might get some of that noisekiller liquid stuff.

Off to Wales tomorrow for a spot of lanning over the Breacon beacons  \:D/  and we're watching a winch challenge at the Seven sisters on Sunday.

Don't think the 2 hour trip up the M4 will be much fun though  ](*,)
I mean't to get some ear plugs but didn't get round to it.

Cheers - V8_redline_4500

Very much like the the economic soundproofing solution, unfortunately came upon a small problem when suggesting it to co-pilot,

It went something like - " After I've paid £**~~.&& for my hair straightening I aint wearing them".

Looks like I'm back to sticking on lots of felt then...

Oh! well,
still thought it was a d**m fine idea though,

This chap's had some really bad feedback recently. It may be as he says, but could be worth holding off a while.
