S3 Steering column top bearing replacement
« on: August 16, 2006, 10:16:00 »
Morning everybody, hope you're all feeling knowledgable today...

The top bearing on my steering column is shot - can wiggle the wheel up and down and side to side, and a load of ball bearings fell out when I was changing the indicator switch, so, well, it's gotta go! I got a replacement bearing (handful of change from Famous Four in Louth - they're good guys) and I'm just after a bit of know-how on the best way to change it. Do I:

A: Whip the wheel off, slide the old bearing out over the shaft and the new one in
or
B: Undo the shaft at the steering box, lift out the shaft and wheel together and swap the bearing
or
C: Something else entirely?

Any input gratefully recieved
