Where has my fuel economy gone?
« on: August 19, 2003, 13:44:07 »
Techy question; I've not changed anything on George and yet where I used to get 535miles to a tank I now get 400!

Does anyone have any bright ideas as to why this might be happening, or more accurately where the leak might be?

Check the injector pipes for signs of a leak.

I had a hairline crack in one on my old 200 Tdi, didn't jump out at you, but made a difference to the economy.  The pipe in question was wet, where the fuel had been seeping out under pressure and spread over the surface of the pipe.

How new are the air and diesel filters?
Have you changed the brand of diesel that you buy most often?
Has the usage changed? Are you stuck in traffic commuting more often?
Have you bought some new (heavier) boots?  :)
Cheers

Like I said, I've not changed anything. I'll have a look at the pipes as I guess that the problem is between the pump and the engine.

Diesel filter....now theres an idea.

Arh but Chris you have now fitted a home made snorkel, could this have some bearing on the extra fuel consumption :?:

If it's a pipe leaking you'll probably be able to smell the diesel and may well have a thin coating of it on your rear door.

If the TDI has them the most likely pipes to be leaking are the short return pipes that loop between the injectors. I've had a few of these fail on several diesel cars and vans.

The consumption change happened before the fitting of the snorkle. I guess I'll just have to check the filters and the pipes this weekend.
