2.25 Vs 2.5 NA Diesel? is it worth it?
« on: January 28, 2006, 16:41:12 »
hello.

am in the middle of a restoration, turning my lwb with rotten chassis into nice new swb.  have got the engine and transmission, steering, axles and bulkhead in place, and am about to start on the electrics

but before i do...

i have been offered a 2.5 NA diesel engine which i could put in place of the current 2.25. is it worth it? i originally wanted to put a 200tdi in, but i really cant afford it.

shall i stick with the 2.25 for the sake of ease, or is there a significant power difference with the 2.5?

anyone done it? will it just slot straight in? will it give me much more power? even if it does, the 2.25 in there at the moment has never run out of power, only speed, so would it be better just to put an Overdrive in?

questions questions questions....

I have a 2.25 and I put 90 diffs in front and rear its alot better on fuel and on the road. They say that a 2.5 is alot better as its a more modern engine. I have been told that they slot straight in. Not totaly sure but I think the battery tray has to go....but not sure...come on guys he needs help.

Johnty has a 2.5 outta a Sherpa van which is the same engine i believe.  PM him as i'm sure he will tell you how his 2a runs.  As far as i remember the quoted output is a good bit higher for the 2.5 than the 2.25.

There is very little difference other than the cc.  Think the timing cover is slightly different but would have to have  look. (90 not on drive at the moment).

If you are doing a chassi up rebuild just drop it in and see what no longer fits.

The differance between a 2.25 D and a 2.5 Nad is 7 BHP i hardly think it is worth the hassle.  I have been told that the only benefit is the extra drivability you get from the 2.5 as it has a better diesel pump.

I would recommend you hang out for the 200tdi later on, well worth the wait.

They as far as I can see pretty much drop straight in (mine came with the 2.5 so i cant be 100% sure) However if you already have a 2.25 then any parts you might require you already have (exhaust manifold etc) . Its true that you have to cut the battery tray, but you dont have to take it out completely just cut a corner off (will go take a picture if you like).

Would I bother with one....hmmmm if the engine you have been offered is cheap enough then you could have it as a spare, but, if the engione you already have is ok then realistically i wouldnt bother.

I've got a sherpa 2.5 NA D in a series 2A. Doesnt seem that different to my mates 2.25 D. I think mine may have a little bit more go but its not that significant.
The 2.5 is a lot noisier than the 2.25 though. Mine roars!

I've got an overdrive too and its possible to cruise at 70 If you are so inclined!

I'm not sure i'd bother swapping if i was starting with a good 2.25.

I put a 2.5d into my 109 sIII and the difference was really noticeable . if I had a 2.25d in any of my L/Rovers I would swop to a 2.5d . it fits straight in and will use the same radiator and filter set up . The only thing you have to move is the battery , ether move it up and squeeze it under the bonnet or put it under the passenger seat . All 2.5 engines are 5 bearing and most 2.25 are 3 bearing ( only the late ones are 5 bearing and rover realized they were floging a dead horse )  I have done this ( not my mates mate  or a guy in the pub ) and it is a great inprovement  . do it  I say ......Al
