2.5 land rover diesel:will it go into a series 3?
« on: January 17, 2006, 21:05:56 »
Hi Ive heard the 2.5 land rover diesel engine will go straight into the series 3 with the same mounts and all. But then Ive also heard that you need a mounting kit and some bits of sherpa to get the thing in. Which is true :?:

at the moment ive got a 2 1/4 petrol but i want (need) an overdrive. will the 2.5 give enough power for an overdrive combined with the higher gearing of R16s?

i think the 2.5 NA diesel is slightly less powerful than the 2.25 petrol, and it also doesnt rev as high.

An overdrive on a series box with a 2 1/4 petrol is fine used a couple and it really works well

A mate of mine put one in a 109 no problem. Had to put the battery underneath the passenger seat though.

AFAIK engine mounts are different (in fact I know they are)... not quite a straight forward swap.  Not as easy as using the Freight Rover version of this engine which is a straight swap (but not as good as an engine)

Apart from fitting different chassis mounts, and swapping the throttle control from a rod to a cable there's not much else to it.

Wouldn't the 2.5 Be bad news for the Series G/Box? Sorry if I'm talking out of my Rectum but I'm sure I heard that the extra torque can fair eat them.

Series transmissions can take up to the 2.5 TD (and therefore 2.5 N/A easily) and still be within the manufacteres specified limits, because the 2.5 TD gives about the same power and torque approx as the 2.6 6-cylinder petrol does.

I went down a different road to upgrade my ratio and bought some 90 diffs which go straight into series axels. I was told that it was not a good thing to do as I have a 2.25 diesel and they thought it would be to much for the engine but its not. Its fine and after about 30mins on a flat open road I can get 85mph.....Only thing is you cant keep the landy in a straight line at that speed. I can stay in 4th gear and slow down to 30mph and then speed up any lower like 25mph and it struggels...may be alot cheeper to get diffs as overdrives are expensive. Shame you are not near me as you could have had a go in it. Fuel consumption is alot better aswell because the engine does not have to screem at 55 to 60mph...best thing I ever did. Everyone who has been in convoy with me all say its fast for a series. Ask Jim willy or Banditman they well impressed.

I run an overdrive and 750R16's on my petrol swb and it has transformed the driving of it.  So much more relaxed.  Don't expect much/if any economy improvement, you just drive faster.  Hence I'm considering a swap to a diesel for this reason (LR 2.5TD or 200tdi - if I win the lottery!).  I ummed and arred about going for 3.54 diffs or overdrive.  In the end, for me, the overdrive was a better solution, just because it was so easy to fit.  I know diffs are straight forward, but there are two and you have to drain oil, pull half shafts out a jot, etc, and being lazy, I went for the easy option.  Paul
