Any guesses on clutch fluid leak?
« on: December 05, 2005, 20:25:23 »
What fun! :(

I have a clutch fluid leak.  It got slowly worse throughout the day today and finally I couldnt get any gears.  Bought some fluid, pumped the peddle up and it works good as ever.

Only clue I have is I jetwashed underneath properley yesterday (lying on my back in the sh*t).

Anyone got any ideas as to common failures?  Is it possible I bust a rusty pipe with the jetwash?

Had to buy a battery this morning 2.  Dont you just love series landys!

Not that many places it can leak from.  Probably yhe slave cylinder.

You've only giot the master cylinder, metal pipe, rubber pipe and slave to choose from :)

No visible leaks anywhere!  Topped it up last night, 20 miles form home, drove it back and then to work this morning.  Fluid level hasnt moved much if at all.

I now appear to have a noisey release bearing.  Could it be leaking from the slave cylinder and into the clutch itself?

Nothings ever simple.... :(

I lost a whole system of fluid through the slave cylinder but because the oil was soaked up in all the clutch dust/dirt inside the bellhousing, there were no visible leaks.

My rigorous maintenance regime meant I didn't realise the fluid was gone until the clutch stopped working  :)

Not much help I know, but I would just keep an eye on it for the next few days to see if the level drops.

Just realised I still have a wading plug fitted since my last bit of offroading!  There could be shedloads of fluid in the bellhousing and it wouldnt get out! :(

Plug out in the morning me thinks and I am ordering a slave cylinder in a mo.  At least I may have caught it before I need to fit a clutch!?

Cheers,

hope you did catch it in time mate. the same happened on my disco. but the wading plug was left in by the last owner. i had to drill a hole in the bell housing to release the fluid. a week later my clutch plate shattered.   fingers crossed you caught it in time mate
cheers

Oh thanks for that!  Just what I wanted to hear!  A bottle of red wine, a few friends round and a few too many whiskys and there I am on my back under the landy at midnight!  My neighbours must think im a complete loon!

Wading plug out but no drips, fingers crossed there isnt enough fluid in to pour out yet?

Will have to wait till the slave cylinder arrives and see what happens!  Ah well, fingers crossed!  I really dont want to put a clutch in.....
