Equipment Advice
« on: March 01, 2004, 20:25:51 »

Sorry if this subject has been covered in other posts - I'm new on here.

I would like some advice on some off road gear I'm going to buy very shortly for my 200tdi Disco.
Best kit, prices, suppliers etc if possible.

Safari Snorkel
Front and Rear Diff Guards
Steering Guard
Wading Plugs
Axle Breathers
Jackable Sills
Detachable Tow Bar
Reinforced Rear Bumper
Mach 5 wheels
Dislocation Cones

Any help would be much appreciated.

Rob

p.s. in the unlikely event anybody wants to sell me any of their kit I would be very interested.

I am in a similar position with my Suzie. Only had it 4 weeks but found loads of stuff just by browsing on the net (for hours according to my missus!!). Still, it has saved me pounds. So the only advice I can say is use google and ebay :)
If I hear of anything I will let you know
If I could only find some mud to play in, I would be as happy as the preverbial pig!!!

Rob, right then:

Safari Snorkel, best to phine round for this one. Most places in the LR mags sell them, so quick phone around to find cheapest.

Front and Rear Diff Guards, QT for meare the best I've got both front and rear ones on http://www.qtservices.co.uk/

Steering Guard, again loads to choose from and depends what you want, some have front recovery points built in.
Few sites,
http://www.scorpionracing.co.uk/
http://www.terrainmaster.com/
http://www.rebel4x4.co.uk/
http://www.southdown4x4.co.uk/
http://www.safetydevices.co.uk/

Axle Breathers, DIY job this one. Local DIY store should do most of what you need also try http://www.vehicle-wiring-products.co.uk/

Jackable Sills, again most of the sites for the steering guard options also do jackable sills, look around for the best price also try here http://www.discoparts.com/index.html

Detachable Tow Bar, http://www.southdown4x4.co.uk/tow.htm

Reinforced Rear Bumper again check out some of the sites above you'll find some there.

Dislocation Cones only ones I know of off hand are http://www.scorpionracing.co.uk/ but they may be others who do them.

OK that's it hope this helps and happy spending  :D

Wow !!

What a reply !!
Thanks mate.
Just in case you're wondering - no - I haven't robbed a bank. I'll have to fit this stuff over a period of time - as you know - it doesn't come cheap.

What gear have you put on yours ?

Rob, with apologies for the shameless promotion, there's details of a lot of the stuff you're interested in on my website, including stuff like fitting instructions and supplier links (most of which Andy's already given you).

Prepare yourself for open wallet surgery :D

Thanks Rob :D

Tony, there's not a great deal left to do in terms of mods. There's a few little bits and pieces like a navigators light that's been sitting on the shelf in the garage for nearly two years, and a chequer plate panel for the roof rack that I've had since Billing before last (sigh, where does the time go?). Oh, and I want to build a new bracket for my hi-lift so it's clamped to the side of the rack instead of the top. Otherwise it's pretty much finished.

I've still got more to add to the site though. It's just that now I'm down to the more time consuming stuff in terms of actually writing it. I've got a load of stuff to do on our Desert Wolf trailer but that'll have to wait until I take it out of winter storage next month. Still, it keeps me off the streets :)

Thanks jaa

I'm going to need one before then.
I'll be interested to watch the development of the Hybrid - somewhere down the line mine might end up the same.

About the bumper - I'm going to fabricate one - I've decided they are too expensive to buy.
I'll post the results on here if anyone is interested .

Hi 'MZ',
Now I've asked your 'neighbour' -Rob-  this (well you're both at Selby)

But were you caravaning at Billing last year?
There was a lifted Discovery next to us & I seem to remember that the owners were down from Selby.
Was it you?
We had the same Discovery, but a Swift Challenger at the time.

Hi Rich

Thanks for the link.
Have you got them fitted to yours ? Or any other Rebel gear ? If so, do you recommend them ?

I'm surprised I haven't seen your Disco - It would definately have caught my eye.

Fancy going to Tong in convoy ? Could be handy if one of us does a number on his motor ?

Let me know what you think.
:D

Rob

p.s. Kev, your're right about the bridge, bypass opens this week,(hopefully ) so it should be a bit better.

Well, I went mad today

I ordered a Safari Snorkel
QT front and rear Diff Guards
Rebel Steering Guard

I would have orderd the Rebel Jackable Sills but they don't do them for 3 doors    YET !! May be making them in near future. Mean time, I might make my own and weld them to the chassis - anyone done anything similar ? Also has anyone got pics of any Jackable Sills before they were fitted, to give me some idea of design ?

I'll post some pics with new toys fitted - they should come tommorrow.

WHEN YOU FIT THE SNORKEL, ADD A COUPLE OF SMALL CROSS-HEADED SELF TAPPERS (AS WELL AS THE JUBILEE CLIP) FOR SECURITY.
THOSE SAFARI TOPS ARE APPROX £70 AND A GUY GOT HIS NICKED AT BILLING LAST YEAR.

The Rebel Steering Guard and Safari Snorkel have arrived, still waiting for the QT diff guards.

Just fitted the Rebel guard  - a word of warning to anyone who buys one, they've got bloody sharp edges ! They may be 'laser cut' but it would have been nice for someone to run over the edges with a sander. I'll do mine after I've scratched the zinc coating when off roading - no point removing any of it before then.
Also - it's not a very snug fit, so make sure you have some round tube to make spacers from.
I had to make 2 X 12mm, 1 X 10mm and 1 X 7mm.
I don't know if it should have come with some, but there's no way it will fit without  :!:

I was just about to fit the snorkel and the heavens opened on me - great British weather. No chance of getting even near my garage, so that will be tommorrows job. :D

Rob,

looking good m8

good choice of snorkel - remember when fitting it to put plenty of sealer on the joints- u dont want any leaks do you!

Have you extended the breather pipes for the axles and gear/transfer boxes?

I knew there was something else  :!:
I'll add the breathers to tommorrows jobs.
The diff guards have just arrived , so they'll be going on tommorow as well.

It's a doddle.
You have to be brave.

You have to get the template in the right place and check it. And check it.

Then take out the part where the snorkel goes through the wing.
Bear in mind it's better to have too small a hole than too large.

I used an airsaw and didn't force it. Be wary of a jigsaw jamming and damaging the wing.

Even though I thought I had the template  right I had to elongate a couple of bolt holes.

I'll fit it for you Paul, if you want.

I've got loads of time now.................  :(
